Abstract |
Reports on a collaborative project that explores trans-disciplinary understanding of the implications of learning English for the health and well-being of refugees. Argues that English literacy is a significant factor in health literacy and access to health care. Uses secondary analysis to analyse primary research with 60 predominantly female adult refugees aged 18 to 64 years. Highlights the experiences of these English language learners and reflects on their relevance for primary health care and nursing practice. |

Abstract |
Examines the experience of nurses who had been out of nursing for more than five years, and explores factors that influenced their leaving and return to practice. Invites nurses who had undertaken a Competency Assessment Programme at a given tertiary institution during 2005 to participate. Analyses and codes quantitative data for 32 nurses who completed the questionnaire, and identifies the three key issues that emerge. |

Adopts a sequential, exploratory mixed-method design, with a qualitative component: in-depth interviews with 17 liver transplant recipients. Employs the nursing theory of cultural safety, Kawa Whakaruruhau, to inform a qualitative approach to the examination of the historical, social, cultural, economic, political, racial and gendered factors contributing to Maori women's health and health-care engagement. Abstract |
Conducts thematic analysis to identify two predominant gender scripts: of nursing as women's work, and that men who nurse are homosexual. Notes the associated themes of the effect of negative stereotyping on male nurses' career choice, and their resistance to the stereotype of normative masculinity. Considers that the same barriers to men becoming nurses have remained unchanged since first identified and discussed in the 1960s. |
