Abstract: Seeks to give voice to migrant nurses, using case-study methodology to highlight their experience of the competence assessment process. Distributes a questionnaire to a group of 22 newly-arrived IQNs, and conducts interviews with 10 IQNs who had been working in NZ for several years. Uncovers the motivations among the first group and reflections on the Competence Assessment Programme (CAP) among the second. Makes recommendations for CAP training based on the results of the study.

Abstract: Explores and identifies factors associated with nurse concern when patient deterioration is recognised in the absence of an emergency activation score such as early warning scoring (EWS) or the physiologically-unstable patient (PUP) tool. Describes the two phases of the multi-site and mixed-methods study: retrospective chart review of 19,326 referrals for emergency assistance; and seven focus group discussions with 29 nurses about what they do when concerned about patient deterioration in the absence of an EWS. Highlights the role of nurse expertise, knowledge and skill in identifying patient deterioration prior to the activation score on an EWS.

Highlights the association between poor performance of NTS with adverse patient events. Abstract: This report is an evaluation of the academic journey undertaken by a group of newly graduated nurses who were sponsored by a New Zealand district health board to work in a variety of primary health care nursing settings. The impetus for this pilot employment option was the Ministry of Health's focus on primary health care nursing and workforce development for this sector and the Expert Advisory Committee for primary health care nursing's recommendations to district health boards regarding employment of graduate nurses and support for them to engage in post graduate study. Evaluation participants were primarily the graduate nurses who were interviewed at the end of their first year of practice which was following programme completion then again nine to ten months later. Findings include the nurses reflections on what supported them and what acted to impede as barriers to their learning success and practice development. The report concludes with five recommendations that can be used to ensure that the travels of future newly graduated nurses taking this pathway are supported, safe and successful.

Abstract: M-Learning compliments and supports E-Learning and incorporates technologies such as the use of mobile phones, PDAs and pod casting. A sub function of M-Learning is M-Support which is the provision of support for the mobile student. This paper describes a pilot project using short message service – mobile technology -to M-support nursing students in primary health care clinical placements. Forty one students took part in a mixed methods study to assess the project against a pre determined set of criteria. The results indicated that students did feel supported by the messages, cost was not prohibitive, flexibility in communication was appreciated, and the acceptance was high.

Abstract: An analysis of the challenges for the nursing profession of the Government's health reforms. The findings of the 10-month Wellington Nurse Case Management Project 1991-1992, including the description of family nursing practice, what it achieved for health and the service delivery model that would position family nurses in the health reforms were used to provide an exemplar for the nuyrising contribution to health policy for the health reforms. The paper identified a vacum for the reorientating of health care provision to patients/clients and health need and the call to nursesw to take leadership in goving direction to the reorientation.

Abstract: A paper presenting the findings of a small research project involving a group of self-selected senior nurses of Wellington Hospital to explore the nature of nursing practice in the care and management of hospitalised patients and to formalise the language that would acknowledge its significance in the current effort of hospitals to define patient care pathways. The nature of hospital nursing practice was described in themes of a generic process of nurse-patient care that articulates a distinct specialism of hospital nursing, whatever the hospital department in which nurses hold positions.
