Abstract: Reports on the qualitative findings of a collaborative study undertaken to monitor implementation of a new model of clinical education for undergraduate nursing students. Describes the development of a clinical education model devised by 3 District Health Boards (DHBs) and 2 universities, based on the inclusion of student nurses in team nursing.

Abstract: Examines the experience of nurses who had been out of nursing for more than five years, and explores factors that influenced their leaving and return to practice. Invites nurses who had undertaken a Competency Assessment Programme at a given tertiary institution during 2005 to participate. Analyses and codes quantitative data for 32 nurses who completed the questionnaire, and identifies the three key issues that emerge.

Abstract: Undertakes a concept analysis, based on the relevant literature from 1990-2005, to develop an operational definition of workplace violence as experienced by registered nurses (excluding mental health nurses), together with a set of criteria to identify the phenomenon.

Abstract: In this paper the authors draw attention to the value and understandings of nurse dignity in the work-life of nurses. A review of nursing literature and a theoretical lens on worker dignity derived from recent work by Hodson (2001) was used to explore these questions. In the context of current and international workforce issues associated with recruitment and retention, analysis of the construct of worker dignity within the profession takes on a strong imperative. Findings of this inquiry reveal that while there is a degree of coherence between the nursing research and elements of Hodson's (2001) research on worker dignity, the dignity of nurses, as a specific construct and as an intrinsic human and worker right has received little explicit attention. Reasons for this may lie partly in approaches that privilege patient dignity over nurse dignity and which rely on the altruism and self-sacrifice of nurses to sustain patient care in environments dominated by cost-control agendas. The value of dignity in the work-life of nurses has been under-explored and there is a critical need for further theoretical work and research. This agenda goes beyond acceptance of dignity in the workplace as a human right towards the recognition that worker dignity may be a critical factor in sustaining development of healthy workplaces and healthy workforces. Directing explicit attention to nurse dignity may benefit the attainment of both nurse and organisational goals. Hodson's (2001) framework offers a new perspective on dignity in the workplace.

Abstract: The authors discuss the usefulness of a generic tool to measure job stress in New Zealand workplaces, and report on a study using one such generic tool. The study involved sending questionnaires to all staff (193) who had worked at a regional women's health service for a minimum of six months. The mailed package contained the Job Stress Survey (JSS), the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12), demographic questions (including cultural safety), shift work questions, and a blank page for “qualitative comment”. Over 12,000 pieces of data were collected from the study but this article focuses only on the results of the JSS. The JSS can be used to determine a “job stress index” and can also be used to measure “job pressure” and “lack of organisational support”. For this study, job stress index scores were calculated and organised by occupational groupings. Midwives, nurses and doctors all cited inadequate or poor quality equipment, excessive paperwork, insufficient personal time, and frequent interruptions, as their top stressors. Three of these four stressors fall within the job pressure index. The results of the survey prompted organisational changes, including: extensive discussions; equipment being updated; management being made aware of the depth of concern felt by staff; the creation of a place for staff to have personal time; and coping intervention strategies were initiated. The authors suggest that no generic measure of job stress can fully evaluate stressors unique to a particular work setting. They support additional items being constructed and administered to assess stressors that are idiosyncratic to a particular occupational group.

Abstract: A nurse presents research and her own experiences of contracting. Contracting, as defined in this article, refers to a nurse not employed permanently on a wage. It covers agency nursing, short and long fixed-term contracts and secondments. The author identifies the need to continue to develop professionally, which is now a mandatory requirement under the Health Practitioners Competence Assurance (HPCA) Act. Contractors have little, if any financial support to develop professionally, and time taken to do courses is not paid. Taking study leave within a contract may also not be an option. Options for managing professional development in these conditions are offered, including goal setting, investing in education or training, and considering some longer contracts. Practical financial advice and examples are given, including managing accounts and consideration of employment law. The author recommends that skilled nurses looking for interesting ways to develop their careers and to branch out in an entrepreneurial way should seriously consider taking up contract work.

Abstract: Presents an overview of the NZ Nurse Specialist Framework (NZNSF), developed through a consensus approach as part of a doctoral study, and which provides an over-arching structure to support coherence, clarity and consistency for nurse specialists. Maintains that the framework supports workforce policy makers in planning effective utlisation of the nurse specialist in health care delivery.

Abstract: For this study, an anonymous survey was sent to registered nurses in their first year of practice. From the 1169 survey instruments that were distributed, 551 were returned completed (a response rate of 47%). The most common inappropriate behaviour by patients involved verbal threats, verbal sexual harassment, and physical intimidation. There were 22 incidents of assault requiring medical intervention and 21 incidents of participants being stalked by patients. Male graduates and younger nurses were especially vulnerable. Mental health was the service area most at risk. A most distressing incident was described by 123 (22%) of respondents. The level of distress caused by the incident was rated by 68 of the 123 respondents (55%) as moderate or severe. Only half of those who described a most distressing event indicated they had some undergraduate training in protecting against assault or in managing potentially violent incidents. After registration, 45 (37%) indicated they had received such training. The findings of this study indicate priorities for effective prevention programmes.
