| Abstract |
This article firstly describes the application of technological care practices in elder care, and then looks at the attitudes of the elderly and their families towards this care. The value of the equipment in terms of quality of care is considered, and a discussion of the continuing education needs of nurses is presented. The ethical questions around the use of technology are examined, along with possible strategies to deal with such issues. |

| Abstract |
This chapter firstly presents the development of a mobile operating theatre project, which was implemented in 2002 to provide rural day-stay surgery. Secondly, it discusses the process and findings of a research project undertaken with the purpose of evaluating a perioperative (theatre and recovery) reskilling programme offered to 42 rural nurses from nine secondary hospitals, conducted over nine months in 2001. The training was given to nurses prior to the introduction of a mobile operating theatre service, and was seen as a key part of the service contract. |

Reports the findings of oral history research into nurses' experiences of training and working in hospitals in NZ during the 1970s and 1980s and their accounts of early collegiality forged as a result of residential living and training in hierarchical hospitals.
