Abstract (down) Undertakes a descriptive exploratory study to ascertain the views of Generation Y NZ Registered Nurses (Gen Y nurses) towards nursing, work and career. Little empirical data exists about why young New Zealanders choose to become nurses in the 21st century. Further, little is known about their future career plans or their intentions to remain in the nursing workforce. Conducts a nationwide on-line survey of 358 Gen Y nurses from late 2009 to early 2010. Reports key findings: young NZ nurses are driven by traditional values of altruism, the desire to care for others, the ability to work closely with people, as well as being able to make a strong contribution to society when deciding to become a nurse, while seeking interesting, challenging and exciting work. Job security, the ongoing demand for nurses, the ability to leave and return, as well as the ability to combine work and family, are also important factors that help them to choose to become nurses.

Abstract (down) Uncovers the significance for nurses who were trained within the 1970s apprenticeship model in NZ hospitals, in their present understanding of themselves as nurses. Confirms that the 1970s heralded the beginning of the end of the apprenticeship system of nurse training, and that literature related to this era of general student nurse training is limited. Uses philosophical hermeneutics to guide interviews with 15 former student nurses who trained within the Auckland Hospital Board School of Nursing, and who reflect 40 years afterward, on how their apprenticeship training influenced the type of nurses they became.

Abstract (down) Two convenience samples of 90 NZ registered nurses responded to two structured questionnaires designed to explore nurses views of caring in nursing practice.The studies demonstrate that nurses see caring as a central concept in their practice. From the response the meaning of caring was found to be multi dimensional, consisting of six components: value, expressive, action, relationship, knowledge and purpose. The value dimension includes areas such as humanistic value and professional value. The expressive component consists of empathy, compassion, trust, concern, sharing and willingness. Action components are helping, comforting, being there, empowering, advocacy, nurturing, advising, touching and performing nursing procedures. The major relationship component is partnership. An important part of the knowledge component is clinical expertise and the purposive component of caring consists of meeting health needs and promoting healing and welfare. The meaning of caring begins to emerge from these studies. However, they do not provide full understanding of caring phenomena. A further in-depth study of actual nursing practice is still in progress

Abstract (down) Traditionally the use of advanced physical assessment skills when assessing a patient or client has been the domain of the medical profession. The last few decades has seen many changes in health provision that have influenced nursing practice, as a result of the social and economic trends impacting on New Zealand society. A notable change in nursing practice has been an increased emphasis on the use of advanced physical assessment skills by registered nurses, as an expected part of the registered nurse's health assessment. Nurses in the United States, and more recently Canada and Australia, readily include these skills as an expansion of their health assessment into their nursing practice. The purpose of this research is to investigate whether New Zealand registered nurses have done the same. The factors that influence the registered nurses' use of these skills are also explored. This descriptive design was chosen in order to focus on exploring and describing this phenomenon in a holistic fashion. Data collection involved one hour semi- structured interviews with seven participants who all completed the same postgraduate advanced health assessment educational course. Three themes were identified as influencing the use of advanced physical assessment skills; the registered nurse's work environment, the registered nurse's attributes and the registered nurse's original nursing education. The findings from this research have implications for nurses in practice and nurse educators, in both undergraduate and postgraduate education.

Abstract (down) To find an effective approach to managing or reducing waiting times for lower triage category patients processed through one particular metropolitan emergency department, an extensive search of the literature revealed several different patient flow processes. These approaches are discussed, in relation to suitability for the particular emergency department. The history of triage, including how and why it evolved, plus the realities of triage today are explored. Included are case examples of two patients on a journey through the department the way it is presently, and how it could be if particular approaches are introduced. Extending nursing practice by introducing nurse-initiated x-rays at triage and the introduction of a separate stream for minor category patients in a dedicated ambulatory care area is one approach that could improve waiting times for these patients. There would be the added advantage of improving triage compliance figures for category three patients. The additional costs involved in such a process could be offset by improved efficiency in terms of waiting times, improved triage compliance figures, happier patients and clinical staff, and an emptier waiting room.
