Abstract Investigates the logistics and acceptability of an electronic medication dispenser (EMD) within a home-based medication management service as a substitute for face-to-face home visiting, as a means of reminding elderly clients to take their medication on time. Uses a qualitative usability study methodology to conduct the study, centred on a small group of clients receiving the service from a small group of clients receiving the service from a community nursing organisation in Christchurch. Involves patients, pharmacists, nurses and managers of the community nursing service. Identifies critical processes and protocols required to safely support a wider roll-out of the product within the service.

Abstract Explores how current nursing and health-care practices can be designed to facilitate effective type 1 diabetes (T1D) self-management in young adults aged 16-25 years. Reviews quantitative and qualitative literature published between 2017 and 2021. Identifies four themes by means of thematic analysis: digital information systems; glucose monitoring and insulin devices; group- and peer-education and peer support; diabetes care delivery style. Highlights the importance of adopting age-appropriate interventions to improve young adults' engagement in T1D self-management, requiring nurses and health-care practitioners to keep up to date with the rapid changes in digital technology and diabetes-related device technology.

Abstract This thesis uses an autoethnographic method to describe the author's personal journey and the influences on teaching the Treaty of Waitangi in the School of Nursing at Otago Polytechnic, from 1985 to 2005. The author starts this exploration as a beginning teaching practitioner in 1985, and continues on with her attendance at the original workshop for trainers by Project Waitangi in 1990. She discusses the influences of her studies towards a Bachelor of Arts at Otago University, through the development of School Charters which influenced her children's schooling and through the process of teaching and facilitating the workshops for Treaty education, until her position in the School of Nursing changed in 2005. She discusses through reflection, the personal influences, the socialisation process of teaching the history of Aotearoa New Zealand to students, the influences of nursing education on Treaty education, the influences of Irihapeti Ramsden's relationship to her journey and also her lecturers at university. She also traces her journey of beginning teaching practice. The author identifies this work as providing a starting place for potential research into the experiences and reflections of nurse educators over this period of time, and across other educational institutes and disciplines. The experiences of students from this teaching would also add to the profession's and the country's knowledge about the relationship of the Treaty of Waitangi to both education and health.

Abstract This clinical case study takes an integrated approach to investigation and critical analysis of the complex physiological and pathophysiological treatment modalities instigated when a patient presents following acute traumatic head injury. A broad overview of the developmental physiology of the brain and an explanation of the mechanism of traumatic brain injury as it relates to alterations in cerebral blood flow, intracranial pressure and cerebral metabolism is presented. The author describes in narrative form the clinical presentation of a patient, her symptoms and initial treatment rationale. It concludes with analysis of the patients initial treatment priorities and symptom management during the first 48 hours of her care.

Employs a qualitative descriptive methodology utilising transition theory as a conceptual framework. Interviews a sample of eight Clinical Nurse Educators about their transition from experienced staff nurse to inexperienced senior nurse. Analyses data using a general inductive approach.

Abstract The aim of this paper was to articulate selected hermeneutic notions for the purpose of extending current understanding of cross-cultural nursing practice, and build on the author's work in this area. The project asserted that the notions of prejudice, paradox and possibility portray a nursing view of this phenomenon. The emphasis in this paper, rather than being methodological, is on showing how specific hermeneutic notions contribute to deeper understanding of the nature of cross-cultural practice. It is argued that contact with, and the capacity to explore, the play of conflicting prejudices and possibilities enhances understanding of the complex and paradoxical nature of cross-cultural nursing.

Abstract This paper provides an overview of the evolving meaning of 'culture' in New Zealand nursing. Then, drawing upon the findings of research that used hermeneutic phenomenology to explore the experience of nursing people from cultures other than one's own, a description of the constituent parts is of this phenomenon is briefly outlined and followed by an exemplar that describes the coalescent and contradictory nature of the phenomenon as a whole. As New Zealand nurses negotiate the conflicts essential for ongoing development of their practice, interplay of the notions of prejudice, paradox and possibility is evident at intrapersonal and interpersonal levels as well as in relation to professional and other discourses.
