Abstract Performs a retrospective audit of eight Diabetes Nurse-Led Clinics (DNLC) in two regions of DNLC provision in Auckland over a 12-month period from 2016-2017, at which 707 patients were booked for appointments. Undertakes a nested sampling of two randomly-selected DNLCs, in which 71 participants were invited to participate. Explores patients' perspectives of attendance or non-attendance at their booked appointments. Examines whether patients perceive any benefits of attendance at the clinics, and identifies factors that might improve their experiences with DNLCs.

Abstract This thesis explores the shared experiential journeys of four Pukorero (participants) who successfully completed detoxification and recovery programmes from AOD addiction. Three questions were used to guide the research process to enable the Pukorero to identify positive aspects of their individual detoxification and recovery programmes, surface any barriers and issues they experienced, and clarify the support they received throughout the process. Kaupapa Maori and narrative inquiry was adapted to undertake this study to capture the essence of Maori thinking and reality regarding AOD. Through the use of thematic analysis the data findings of the study reflect the views from each Pukorero of Wairua, Whakapapa and Whanau as key to their successful recovery. This supports the notion that a pathway of detoxification, recovery and hope exists to enable Maori and others to take the journey to reclaim their own health and well-being, and the health and well-being of whanau, hapu, iwi, and Maori community. In honour of these Pukorero, kaumatua, tipuna, whanau, hapu, iwi, Maori katoa, and to celebrate kaupapa Maori and narrative inquiry [as the preferred methodological approach], the use of our tino ataahua reo integrated with English throughout the thesis demonstrates the interwoven connections between the two cultures enshrined in Te Tiriti o Waitangi that comprise the nation of Aotearoa me Te Waipounamu of New Zealand.

Abstract The author contends that responses to cultural diversity in nursing need to consider the theory and practice developments of the profession, whilst also responding to broader social and historical process that prevent marginalised groups from utilising universal health services. A combination of approaches is suggested in this paper to meet these two imperatives. Cultural safety is one indigenous New Zealand nursing approach derived in response to inequalities for Maori, whereas cultural competence is an imported paradigm derived from a multicultural context. Furthermore, research and dialogue are required to examine points of complementarity and tension. This paper offers a beginning for this process.

Abstract Historical facts from 1881 pertaining to Wellington Hospital, and the training of nurses, commencing with the employment of unpaid Lady Nurses, the conditions of employment for probationers (circa 1883), the formal teaching of probationers 1888, progressing to a three year training, and, with Miss Ellen Dougherty a Wellington trainee being the first registered nurse in the world in 1901. Management of the 1880's and 90's appears a little strange, not employing their own trainees, nor appointing Miss Dougherty as matron, when she had been acting matron.Extrapolation of historical facts to give a probable characterisation of the unpaid Lady nurses and the day in the life of a probationer nurse of these times.Inferences suggest that nursing in New Zealand had military rather than religious origins and, perhaps Misses Selena Sutherland and Dougherty were not lady like enough to be employed by Wellington Hospital!

Abstract New Zealand's older population is gradually increasing. This will men the number of people with problems related to psychological and general well-being will also rise. When compared to women, men do not live as long, are more likely to die from intentional injury and use primary health services less. There is a paucity of research on older men, particularly within a New Zealand context. Because nurses work closely with people in primary, secondary and tertiary care settings they are well placed to undertake research and utilise research findings from studies relating to the older adult to promote health and well -being. The intention of the present study was to gain a greater understanding of those factors which impact on the well-being in older men. Based on Wan, Odell and Lewis's (1992) model of general well-being, mental, social and physical well-being indicators were investigated to examine their relationships to overall psychological well-being and physical health.The data for the present study was collected from a non-probability sample of 217 males (over 65 years) residing in the Wanganui area. Multiple regression analysis reveled that of the mental, social and physical indicators only satisfaction with social supports and number of visits to the doctor in the previous 12 months were significantly related to psychological well-being, and number of medications and illness/disabilities were significantly related to physical health as measured by self ratings of health.Findings are discussed in relation to the literature. It ids clear that nurses, and other health professionals, need to be aware of the relationship between objective health status and subjective well-being, and the distinction between the quality and quantity of support in order to provide effective care to older men. Finally the general limitations and future research implications are discussed

Abstract Maternal child care in New Zealand has traditionally been given by a variety of providers from the private and public sector. The reorganisation of the health services has effected all forms of health delivery including maternal and well child care or well child care services. Contracting of services in a competitive environment has been an important feature of the reorganisation process. Ashton (1995) notes that the system of contracting has facilitated the introduction of new approaches to health from new provider groups, which are not necessarily based on primary health care principles. This has led to confusion for providers and consumers alike. In 1996 a new national schedule which described the services recommended for maternal and child care was introduced called WellChild/Tamariki Ora. A questionnaire based on this schedule was administered to a sample of 125 parents of children under five years of age in Hawkes Bay to investigate issues relating to the provision and receipt of well care services.Descriptive data showed that the major providers in the present study were doctors. There were significant differences found in the number of services received by the less educated, the unemployed, single parent families, and Maori and Pacific Island people.Perceptions about the helpfulness of services received were not related to ratings of the child's health. Parents who received a greater number of Family/Whanau support services rated their children's health more highly. Findings are discussed in relation to the previous literature and recommendations are presented with particular emphasis on the implications for nursing and the role of nurses in providing well child care services

The programme is delivered through email and the Body of Knowledge website and consists of 31 core modules focusing on methods to induce long term weight loss. This study investigated the efficacy of the Body of Knowledge programme as an avenue for reducing the obesity epidemic. In addition, this study assessed the impact of financial incentives on weight loss. The study involvedf 20 participants with an attrition rate of 30 percent.

Abstract This thesis explores the customary kaupapa of Matauranga Maori or Maori knowledge, which the author identifies as the appropriate technique to determine how health care should be maintained by and for Maori. The research highlights the need to meld these kaupapa with that of a contemporary Maori viewpoint, to focus more on a deeper enhancement of these kaupapa, and develop an understanding of the social, cultural, educational, political and economic contexts these concepts have on Maori as a people. This research identified six Maori registered women nurses, who shared their experiences regarding Matauranga Maori and its importance to their nursing practice. Over a period of one year, in-depth conversations unfolded and produced data on what Matauranga Maori involves and how the six participants in the study believe it influences their nursing practices. All were currently practicing nurses within various health settings such as psychiatric and comprehensive nursing. From the inception of this study, the focus was to introduce Matauranga Maori as the epistemological framework of choice. The author notes that the findings of this research indicate that a collection of key kaupapa, namely whakapapa, whanaungatanga, te reo Maori, wairuatanga, tuurangawaewae, manaakitanga and rangatiratanga are crucial to the health and wellbeing of Maori as a people. These kaupapa enable Maori to determine and strengthen their worldview, which in turn reflects the concept of being Maori thereby contributing to the health and status of their whanau, hapu and iwi. She goes on to say that the findings support the view that there is a substantial collection of kaupapa, which are inherent in Matauranga Maori as being able to provide a framework for theoretical research. These kaupapa will provide a framework for nursing practice and educational curricula that will develop and maintain nursing standards to meet the needs of Maori.

Abstract The role of storytelling in any society fulfils multiple functions such as maintaining culture, holding history, teaching genealogical lessons, imparting wisdom, entertaining, passing on knowledge. The author suggests that nursing, historically described as a craft with an oral tradition, could be seen to be quietly moving away from the practice of storytelling. Or has it? She asked this question and began to realise that her practice and relationships with colleagues had always been based on stories and storying. To explore this phenomenon, she began to describe her day to day practice in story form, and began to position stories she had previously written. In her work of oncology palliative care nursing within a community setting in New Zealand, the stories proved crucial to her role as an educator, and companion of patients and their families. In this paper she examines how she uses story for her benefit, the patients' benefit, but mainly for the benefit of nursing. She examines from her own perspective, some underlying themes that reinforce the need to continue this ancient tradition and explore the role, value and function of storytelling within nursing.
