This article defines dementia, and explores recent trends in relation to why it is such a misunderstood condition in the health care setting. Within a theoretical framework of literature development, nurse client relationships, and quality of care and attitudes are analysed. Gaps, inconsistencies and consistencies are outlined, with the implications for nursing practice and education explored. |

Abstract |
The purpose of this thesis is to give voice to school nursing as a primary health care specialty, and to promote the development of school nursing in New Zealand. School nursing is an invisible practice specialty that is largely funded from within the education sector, to address the health needs of student clients. School nursing is a significant primary health care initiative that can positively influence student health outcomes. The author presents her own school nursing practice experience and philosophy, prior to reflecting upon the history of school nursing, and the health concerns present within the student population. The work then moves to review and critique school nursing literature from New Zealand, Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States. This thesis highlights the need for collaborative policy and practice development initiatives including a legislative requirement for school nurses, school nursing competencies and standards, school nurse to student ratios, postgraduate training, professional liaison, practice funding, and research. A discourse on the reflective topical autobiographical method introduces autobiographical poetry from school nursing practice and reflective inquiry, as the central research endeavour of this thesis. Autobiographical poetry is offered as a window to this specialty practice, and accompanying reflections allow access to a further layer of practice knowledge. |

Abstract |
This paper focuses on the history of Plunket nursing and Truby King's ideology and other dominant ideologies, during the years 1905 – 1920. To provide a context, the paper explores the development of a new nursing speciality – Plunket nursing, that became part of the backbone of a fledgling health system and the New Zealand nursing profession. Correspondingly, Truby King presented the country with a vision for improving infant welfare underpinned by his eugenics view of the world and his experimentation with infant feeding. The author argues that nurses were drawn to the work of the newly created Plunket Society and that the Society had lasting influence on the development of nursing in New Zealand. |

Abstract |
The role of storytelling in any society fulfils multiple functions such as maintaining culture, holding history, teaching genealogical lessons, imparting wisdom, entertaining, passing on knowledge. The author suggests that nursing, historically described as a craft with an oral tradition, could be seen to be quietly moving away from the practice of storytelling. Or has it? She asked this question and began to realise that her practice and relationships with colleagues had always been based on stories and storying. To explore this phenomenon, she began to describe her day to day practice in story form, and began to position stories she had previously written. In her work of oncology palliative care nursing within a community setting in New Zealand, the stories proved crucial to her role as an educator, and companion of patients and their families. In this paper she examines how she uses story for her benefit, the patients' benefit, but mainly for the benefit of nursing. She examines from her own perspective, some underlying themes that reinforce the need to continue this ancient tradition and explore the role, value and function of storytelling within nursing. |

Abstract |
This research explores the issues and experiences of mental health nurses who experience or have experienced mental illness. This project was prompted by the author's concern for colleagues and friends in this situation. The research topic was approached using a mix of critical ethnography and action research principles. Five mental health nurses who all work for the same district health board were interviewed about their experiences of being mental health professionals with mental illness and the issues that arose from this. The themes that emerged from this research are: the reactions of nurse colleagues, the effects on participants' own mental health treatment, employer responses, professional experiences and issues and strategies for coping. Discussion and recommendations focus on the need for improvements to the responses that mental health nurses with experience of mental illness encounter in their workplace. Recommendations from this research encompass suggestions for both individual and organisational education, action and change. |

Abstract |
This thesis contains a collection of stories gifted by four New Zealand Retrieval Team nurses who are experienced in the transport of patients. These nurses are commonly called flight nurses and they assist in the transport of patients via helicopter, fixed-wing aeroplane, large commercial aeroplanes and ambulances. While their practice is not exclusively in the helicopter there is an emphasis on this mode of transport in this thesis. Flight nursing is a scope of nursing practice where the use, and visibility, of nurses' stories is rare. The specific context of this research is positioned in one tertiary intensive care unit in New Zealand but it is anticipated that the stories from four flight nurses and the author's subsequent thoughts on them will resonate with flight nurses in other regions. The stories were collected using a storytelling methodology that has been informed by qualitative and feminist perspectives. The stories were either gathered and shaped using interview and transcription techniques with the storyteller and the researcher, or written by the storyteller. The thesis has been written as a narrative and chronicles the journey to the point of receiving the stories and the lines of inquiry in which they subsequently directed the author. The stories are central to this research and appear in their entirety. The reader is encouraged to create their own meaning from the stories. The stories themselves have several common threads, which are planning, communication, teamwork and the unexpected. The threads underpinning the stories are not unique to flight nursing practice and have been discussed in other scopes of practice. One area the author has chosen to explore in more depth is the impacts of technology, privacy, narrative pedagogy and disenfranchisement on the visibility of flight nurses' stories. The other area she has chosen for discussion is advanced and specialty nursing practice as it relates to flight nurses. As a result of this discussion she proposes her own view for advanced and specialty practice in flight nursing. |

Abstract |
This paper describes a three-year long research project in which nine large-bodied women have engaged in a prolonged dialogue with the researcher about the experience of being 'obese'. The study involved an extensive review of the multidisciplinary literature that informs our understandings of body size. The literature review was shared with participants in order to support their critical understanding of their experience. The experience of participants raised questions as to how nursing could best provide health-care for large women. An examination of a wide range of literature pertinent to the area of study reveals widespread acceptance of the notion that to be thin is to be healthy and virtuous, and to be fat is to be unhealthy and morally deficient. According to the literature review, nurses have perpetuated an unhelpful and reductionist approach to their care of large women, in direct contradiction to nursing's supposed allegiance to a holistic approach to health-care. This paper suggests strategies for an improved response to women who are concerned about their large body size. |

Abstract |
This study explores the development of 'family-centred care' in New Zealand as part of an international movement advanced by 'experts' in the 1950s concerned with the psychological effects of mother-child separation. It positions the development of 'family-centred care' within the broader context of ideas and beliefs about mothering and children that emerged in New Zealand society between 1960 and 1980 as a response to these new concerns for children's emotional health. It examines New Zealand nursing, medical and related literature between 1960 and 1990 and considers both professional and public response to these concerns. The experiences of some mothers and nurses caring for children in one New Zealand hospital between 1960 and 1990 illustrate the significance of these responses in the context of one hospital children's ward and the subsequent implications for the practice of 'family-centred care'. This study demonstrates the difference between the professional rhetoric and the parental reality of 'family-centred care' in the context of one hospital children's ward between 1960 and 1990. The practice of 'family-centred care' placed mothers and nurses in contradictory positions within the ward environment. These contradictory positions were historically enduring, although they varied in their enactment. |

Abstract |
A participatory approach, grounded in both critical social and feminist research, was used in this study of seven women who claim being lesbian as part of their identity. With the objective of providing information to enhance safe care provision for this marginalised group, the study explored factors which hindered or facilitated these women's sense of safety related to health care. The findings indicate that barriers to receiving health care exist for these women. As there is little local or international research on lesbians and healthcare, this work offers a starting place for future New Zealand nursing research involving lesbians. The authors encourage other nurses to explore previously ignored sections of our society in order to strive for safety for all those whom nursing serves. |

Abstract |
This thesis presents an explorative study of the place of caring in bioethics. Through the examination of various sources of literature from the disciplines of nursing, feminist theory and ethics, and bioethics, a case is developed that argues for a valid respected place for caring, as an ethic of care in bioethical decision-making. The case is built by providing evidence to support the fundamental importance of caring to human life, health, relationships, and survival at the broad societal level. This is presented from the feminist and nursing perspectives, along with a critique of the negative aspects of caring practices. The next stage of the case presents a layout of the discipline of bioethics, using an historical perspective to illuminate the influences of bioethics' deep past, as it still affects the discipline in the present. The development of contemporary bioethics' current status is presented along with critiques from bioethicists themselves, and nursing and feminist theory and ethics. In the case at this point, from a bioethical perspective, two major predicaments appear to prevent an ethic of care obtaining a valid place in ethical decision-making in bioethics. These are the justice/care duality, and the conflict between different conceptions of care and autonomy. The bioethical objections and arguments put forward regarding these predicaments are examined and refuted, and the author suggests a case is established for the inclusion of an ethic of care in bioethical decision-making. |

Abstract |
This research study examined the role of the public health nurse. Utilising community needs analysis method, 17 key informants and two focus groups were asked questions to determine perceptions of the public health nurse. Findings indicated that participants lacked knowledge regarding the role. Additional findings intimated that participants had difficulty in accessing public health nurse services and that 'knowing the system' was beneficial to receiving needed care. One of the major conclusions of this study was that many facets of care managed by public health nurses were invisible to the communities in which they work. Conclusions suggest that public health nurses need to enhance their service by improving accessibility to services and promoting their service in a more visible manner. |

Abstract |
The aim of this study was to determine the feasibility of establishing a nurse practitioner-led, family focused, primary health care clinic within a New Zealand primary school environment as a means of addressing the health needs of children and families. A secondary aim was to ascertain whether public health nurses were the most appropriate nurses to lead such a clinic. Utilising a community needs analysis method, data were collected from demographic data, 17 key informant interviews and two focus group interviews. Analysis was exploratory and descriptive. Findings included the identification of a wide range of health issues. These included asthma management and control issues, the need to address poor parenting, and specific problems of the refugee and migrant population. Findings also demonstrated that participant understanding of the role of the public health nurse was less than anticipated and that community expectations were such that for a public health nurse to lead a primary health care clinic it would be likely that further skills would be required. Outcomes from investigating the practicalities of establishing a nurse practitioner-led clinic resulted in the preparation of a community-developed plan that would serve to address the health needs of children and families in the area the study was undertaken. Services that participants identified as being appropriate included health information, health education, health assessment and referral. The authors conclude that the establishment of a nurse practitioner-led, family focused, primary health care clinic in a primary school environment was feasible. While a public health nurse may fulfil the role of the nurse practitioner, it was established that preparation to an advanced level of practice would be required. |

Using nursing and associated literature, the relevance of nutrition in the care of children and families is highlighted in this article. The role of a nurse in providing nutrition advice and interventions is examined, in the context of social and economic pressures on the provision of a healthy diet. Relevant examples of the provision of such advice is provided, along with competencies required to achieve this in practice. |
