Background:
The 2006 New Zealand (NZ) Guidelines for Rheumatic Fever (RHF) (National Heart Foundation of New Zealand and Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand, 2006) have an over-arching objective to support appropriate management of RHF to prevent recurrent attacks and reduce mortality and morbidity from RHF and Rheumatic Heart Disease (RHD) (Craig, Anderson, & Jackson, 2008; National Heart Foundation of New Zealand and Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand, 2006).
Aims:
The aims of this study were to audit current practice and service provision associated with RHF programmes and initiatives in NZ District Health Boards (DHBs) against the 2006 NZ Guidelines for RHF and to identify the barriers and facilitators to clinicians meeting the guidelines.

Abstract: Case study research, as a qualitative methodology, attracts some criticism, especially related to rigour, reliability and validity. A New Zealand-based study that explored complex phenomena – flexible learning for postgraduate nurses – provides a practical example of how the case study design can address these criticisms. Through describing the mixed methods used, different sources and methods of data collection, and data analysis, the process of achieving data quality and trustworthiness are highlighted.

Hendry, C., & East, S. (2013). Impact of the Christchurch earthquakes on clients receiving health care in their homes. Available through NZNO library, 4(1), 4–10.
Abstract: Eighteen months after the first of many large earthquakes, Christchurch-based home health care provider Nurse Maude surveyed staff to identify the impact on the well-being of their mainly elderly clients. Responses from 168 staff identified five key issues. These were: mental health, anxiety, and depression, symptoms similar to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD); unsafe environments; loneliness and isolation; difficulty coping with change; and poor access to services. To meet the needs of clients in this challenging environment, staff felt they needed more time to care, including listening to stories, calming clients and dealing with clients who had become slower and more cautious. Damaged and blocked roads, and the fact that many clients moved house without warning, added to the time it took to deliver care in the home. This survey has helped Nurse Maude build on its initial post-earthquake responses to better meet the needs of clients and support health-care workers in this stressful environment.

Abstract: There is a considerable body of literature discussing the stressors experienced by nurses and other health professionals when caring for those who are terminally ill and dying. Also, a number of articles offer suggestions, including the views of staff, as to what type of professional and organisational support is required when working in this often demanding specialty. There are, however, very few reports of assessment of the effectiveness of such supportive interventions and in particular, the impact of such support on the quality of patient care. This literature review examines any reported relationships between the quality of nursing provided by palliative care nurses and the staff support received by those nurses.

Abstract: The original aim of the study was to find out through a questionnaire what child health/paediatric nurses in New Zealand/Aotearoa saw as their needs for post-registration education. Nurses were completing courses in the United Kingdom and returning to New Zealand/Aotearoa and realising that their nursing capabilities had improved. They became senior nurses with education responsibilities and exhibited political leadership among their colleagues in the field of child health/paediatric nursing. They were becoming increasingly concerned at the lack of any clinical courses in the specialty of child health/paediatric nursing to promote an appropriate standard of practice. It was intended that a research project about post-registration child health/paediatric education would assist concerned nurses to develop a programme. The time needed for such a project did not fit with a limited research paper. It was decided to reduce the project to a review of the literature on competence in nursing, with some comment on the specialty of child health/paediatric nursing. In order for nurses to find what they need to learn and know, an understanding of competence in nursing practice is required. Competence is defined as the ability of the nurse to carry out specific work in a designated area at a predetermined standard. Issues around competence, defining a scope of practice, development and assessment of competence, and regulation of nursing, are part of the context in which accountability for the practice of nurses sits.

Abstract: Identifies the experiences of NZ cancer nurses whose primary role is to care for patients aged 20 or older, and their whanau/family, and describes the factors that may influence care. Examines whether nurses received training in the management of stressors associated with caring for cancer patients, either during their training or while in the cancer workplace setting. Considers whether nurses working in peripheral (satellite) cancer centres were at more risk than their colleagues in larger regional centres. Conducts a quantitative, descriptive and anonymous survey of members of the Cancer Nurses' Section of the NZNO, using the Professional Quality of Life (ProQOL) questionnaire, which scores compassion fatigue, compassion satisfaction and burnout.

Abstract: This research aims to design and test the feasibility of an intervention promoting smoking cessation, and reducing smoking relapse, among Māori nurses who smoke. It is being conducted in two phases. Phase one, a national web-based survey, conducted in December 2012, explored the views of Māori nurses (smokers, ex-smokers and non-smokers) regarding smoking. This paper reports on the analysis of qualitative responses from 410 nurses and nursing students identifying as Māori who completed an online survey. Five themes were identified: beliefs about smoking; ?for our tamariki?; personal stories of quitting; dissatisfaction with current approaches; and plans for future strategies. The findings confirm that nurses who smoke may experience feelings of conflict, and regard their behaviour as inconsistent with their role as nurses and health promoters. Nurses who smoke must be supported to become, and to stay, smokefree. Tailored Māori-specific cessation initiatives are needed.

Abstract: It has been shown that intensive management of diabetes with type 2 diabetes is effective and has led to wider use of insulin. The conversion of patients from oral medication to insulin is usually managed in primary care. The study discussed here aimed to explore how patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) perceived insulin. The study was conducted in 2009 in an urban general practice in a large town in New Zealand with more than 300 patients with type 2 diabetes. A qualitative study was conducted with face-to-face interviews with 13 participants. The question focused on insulin initiation, lifestyle and routine. The transcribed responses were subject to thematic anaylsis. Interviews showed participants felt restricted by the prospect and eventuality of the routine and restrictions of being on insulin. Results show there needs to be a greater emphasis on the disease being progressive. This study provides the ground work for developing resources that will benefit patients with T2DM.

Sustained weight loss maintenance is a constant challenge, especially for morbidly obese individuals who have tried and failed repeatedly. Why is it then, that some individuals are successful whilst others are not so successful? This two-phase sequential, mixed methods study sought to identify and gain insight into the factors associated with successful weight loss maintenance for participants in an adult weight management programme in the Waikato. Success appeared to be independent of age, gender, ethnicity, domicile, employment status and the presence of co-morbities.
Four major themes emerged:
- “Actions speak louder than words – just do it” (Following a lower energy diet, having higher levels of physical activity, regular self weighing, and vigilance in adjusting their behaviours based on the results)
- Routines were also important in supporting the changed behaviours
- What's it worth to me
- Valuing the achievements associated with lesser weight was seen as another important factor of success

The nurse practitioner is one of the newest nursing health care professionals to be introduced to the New Zealand health system for many years. Eighty-six nurse practitioners are credentialed in New Zealand, with three working in urban Emergency Department settings. Nurse Practitioners are common internationally especially in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom and Australia. The purpose of this integrated literature review is to explore current research and literature in regards to the Emergency Department Nurse Practitioner, and their role within emergency settings. This review presents the growth and development of the nurse practitioner as an advanced practice nursing position. Four key themes emerge from the literature review; education of the Emergency Nurse Practitioner , how and who defined the Emergency Nurse Practitioner role, practice setting of the Emergency Nurse Practitioner, and what the barriers are to independent practice. The economic, legal and governance aspects of the Nurse Practitioner role are also portrayed. This integrated review documents the potential for further development and expansion of the Emergency Nurse Practitioner scope of practice to provide a broad range of patient care services within Emergency Departments, and emergency care settings. Future research is essential for the promotion of autonomous practice of the Emergency Nurse Practitioner within the international and New Zealand health care system.

As the healthcare system moves toward a consumer-driven paradigm, visiting hours for family and significant others of the intensive care unit patient have become a topic of interest and discussion. Research since the 1970s has generated controversy and speculation over the ideal visiting practices in the adult intensive care unit. Analysis of the growing body of research can now be reviewed to enable existing visiting policies to be revised.

Abstract: In 1997, Advanced Mental Health Nursing Programmes were funded nationally by the Clinical Training Agency using the funds made available subsequent to the 1996 Mason Report. The training leads to an award of either a post graduate certificate or diploma awarded by a tertiary education provider.A review was conducted with the aim to monitor the impact on service provision of advanced mental health nurse practitioner training. This was done by obtaining feedback through using an agreed standard questionnaire from course participants and mental health service providers.In seeking to learn more about the impact of these programmes, the CTA identified the following key issues:- what effect the courses may have had on mental health workforce make-up, skills and retention.- perceptions of programme delivery and content.- the impact on service delivery.Overall findings are shared which highlight that the course was seen as well organised and participants and service providers would recommend it to their colleagues. The greatest effect of the course appeared to be in developing more understanding of clinical supervision. Participating in the course had also led to positive changes in relationships with the clients and colleagues for more than three quarters of the group.The provision of an Advanced Mental Health Nursing Programme in 1997 has had many positive effects. The funding strategy and delivery models that have evolved may provide a useful template for other nursing specialty areas
