Abstract: Argues that teaching de-escalation skills early in the nursing programme is vital for student safety and later retention in the nursing workforce. Sets out to determine the efficacy of communication training to teach nursing students agression-management skills while on clinical placement. Designs a quasi-experimental design using pre- and post-tests of communication competence following an education module delivered as part of the curriculum.

Abstract: Reports on a local multi-component initiative to improve local Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination coverage among Maori male students aged 13-17 years in a rural location in Aotearoa New Zealand. Backgrounds the initiative co-designed by the rural health nurse from a community clinic of the Hauora (Maori health provider) and the principal of the local area school, in order to improve health literacy and provide an environment to support student consent to vaccination. Undertakes an evaluation of the initiative in 2018, comprising 10 key informant interviews and a group discussion with eight male students. Identifies the factors associated with the success of the initiative.

Abstract: The authors note that the literature identifies that the transition from tertiary based training to the realities of industry expectations can be a stressful period for graduates. Various District Health Boards offer postgraduate papers within their graduate nursing programmes, resulting in graduates being expected to perform the role of a beginning practitioner as well as embark on postgraduate education during this first year. As yet, the authors note, there is little evidence available to substantiate the efficacy and impact of such papers. The purpose of this study was to explore graduate nurse's experience of postgraduate education within the Graduate Nurse Programme. The report contains the results of a survey of nurses within the Programme. This report details the results of that survey and make recommendations for consideration.

Abstract: Explores volunteer actor patients' contribution to developing nursing students' clinical skills from the patient actors' perspective within a simulation learning environment. Describes how actor patients work with nursing students during simulation, providing feedback following each simulation. Conducts focus group interviews with four of these actor patients about their interactions with students, communication, the provision of realism, student engagement, and feedback to students.

Abstract: Backgrounds and describes the Hand Model, developed by a nurse teacher to assist her in teaching cultural safety, and suggests its potential to provide a framework for creating a culturally-safe environment for international students in NZ, including those aspects of cultural safety specific to NZ.

Abstract: Seeks to develop a better understanding of the undergraduate nursing students' experience of their clinical placement in mental health, and to identify the influences on student learning in an acute adult mental health service. Enrols a cohort of 13 nursing students to analyse their lived experiences through their written reflections on practice, which offered important insights into the students' experience of their first mental health clinical placement. Identifies six themes by means of thematic analysis.

Abstract: Conducts an exploratory case study investigating the experiences of third-year undergraduate nursing students in simulations, collecting stories about their experiences in the clinical environment, and highlighting the potential use of simulation as an alternate learning environment to foster the development of clinical judgement in nursing students. Considers two research questions: how do nursing students experience simulation as an environment for learning, and how do nursing students' learning experiences in simulation and clinical practice influence their development of clinical judgement skills? Conducts one-to-one interviews and observes simulations in the course of an exploratory case study.

Abstract: This study uncovers the experience of being ethical from the perspective of pre-registration nursing students. Using the qualitative methodology of phenomenology, specifically that outlined by van Manen, it seeks to show how students act ethically within everyday practice. Providing nursing care is an ethically charged undertaking and despite ethics taking an increasingly important place in nursing education, the author suggests that few studies show the contextual nature of ethical practice from the perspective of students. This study aims to partly redress this situation. In this study the author has interpreted the experiences of twelve pre-registration students. Using seventeen stories shared by the student participants, the author's personal understandings and literature, the meaning of being ethical has been illuminated. Three themes emerged from the interpretation. These include 'keeping things 'nice'', 'being true to yourself' and 'being present'. This thesis asserts that the overarching theme within these themes is that of 'being constrained and enabled'. Being constrained shows the experiences of students as they live through the tensions of being and doing as they strive to be ethical. Being enabled shows the experience of self-determination. Finally the study maintains that the shaping of ethical practice for undergraduate students may be enhanced when their reality is positioned and valued within educational processes.
