The priorities of nursing research in New Zealand were derived from the findings of a semi-structured survey of the opinions of nurses in academic settings.

Abstract: The Body of Knowledge is a New Zealand internet weight programme developed in 2007. The programme is delivered through email and the Body of Knowledge website and consists of 31 core modules focusing on methods to induce long term weight loss. This study investigated the efficacy of the Body of Knowledge programme as an avenue for reducing the obesity epidemic. In addition, this study assessed the impact of financial incentives on weight loss. The study involvedf 20 participants with an attrition rate of 30 percent.

Abstract: Explores whether there is a relationship between staffing and quality indicators in residential care of older people, in both rest homes and continuing-care hospitals. Conducts a longitudinal survey of 18 residential-care rest homes and 16 continuing-care hospitals in the greater Auckland region to explore the relationship between direct-care staffing levels, skill mix and quality indicators. Collects data over a 6-month period on type of staffing, including registered nurses, enrolled nurses, and support workers; quality indicators, including falls, new fractures, pressure ulcers, weight loss, urinary tract infections (UTI), poly-pharmacy or multiple medications, presence of indwelling catheters and use of daily restraints. Uses logistic analysis to analyse the inverse relationship between staffing levels and adverse events, and whether there is an association between staff type and the incidence of the five quality indicators.

Abstract: Reports findings from semi-structured interviews with 6 nurses and 7 women patients at a sexual health clinic where the women reported positive experiences of speculum examinations. Combines data with that from interviews with 16 patients and 16 clinicians regarding positive examinations, and analyses data to identify which clinical communication strategies were used, and how the women responded. Highlights the legacy of the Cartwright Report of the Cervical Cancer Inquiry of 1987/88.

Abstract: Explores long-term care-home residents’ quality of life and their family's satisfaction with the care provided. Uses descriptive and correlational analyses, collecting secondary data from 39 residents of two long-term care facilities with a resident-directed care approach. Asks residents to complete a survey of quality-of-life and overall satisfaction measures, and asks 31 of their family members to complete a survey on care satisfaction provided by the facilities. Presents a number of practical considerations for nursing care staff to improve residents' quality of life and staff-family relationships.

Abstract: This article reports the implementation of a collaborative project undertaken to monitor and improve the effectiveness of the prescribing practicum papers delivered within two Master's degree programmes in advanced nursing practice. The recent introduction of Nurse Practitioner registration in New Zealand has resulted in the development of a number of Master's degree programmes in which students can complete a Nursing Council of New Zealand approved programme for prescribing. For the study, a developmental action research approach was used. Data were collected through interviews with practicum students, their medical supervisors and academic staff. Formative findings were progressively used to refine delivery of the practicum papers and a thematic analysis of summative findings identified areas for further improvement. The findings suggest that the processes being implemented are developing well. The researchers recommend that further education is required to clearly differentiate medical and advanced nursing roles. They recommend that greater attention needs to be paid to the preparation of medical supervisors and, most significantly, revision of funding is required to more equitably support the ongoing development of nurses for advanced practice roles.

Abstract: The author discusses the impact of 'new genetic knowledge' on society and how molecular and clinical genetics are having an increasing influence on routine health care. Increasingly, nurses will be exposed to this new genetic knowledge and challenged to integrate it into their clinical practice in order to ensure that patients and families receive the best health care available. The paper reports the percentage of undergraduate nursing curricula devoted to teaching about genetics and considers how the fundamental principles of molecular genetics and the clinically relevant areas of genetics can be incorporated into pre- or post-registration education.

Abstract: The authors report a survey of all nurses working in hospitals included in the International Hospital Outcomes Study of staffing and patient outcomes in New Zealand's secondary and tertiary hospitals from 1988-2001. The survey examines the way in which the hospitals have been restructured and analyses patient outcomes. Research has identified links between how nursing is organised in a hospital and that hospital's patient outcomes.

Abstract: A participatory approach, grounded in both critical social and feminist research, was used in this study of seven women who claim being lesbian as part of their identity. With the objective of providing information to enhance safe care provision for this marginalised group, the study explored factors which hindered or facilitated these women's sense of safety related to health care. The findings indicate that barriers to receiving health care exist for these women. As there is little local or international research on lesbians and healthcare, this work offers a starting place for future New Zealand nursing research involving lesbians. The authors encourage other nurses to explore previously ignored sections of our society in order to strive for safety for all those whom nursing serves.

Egan, M. (1999). The nursing and midwifery practice structure at Healthcare Hawkes Bay: An evaluation and improvement process. Vision: A Journal of Nursing, 5(8), 27–29.
Abstract: This article describes the Nursing and Midwifery Practice Structure, which has been in place at Healthcare Hawkes Bay since 1996. It was developed to provide nurses and midwives in clinical positions with a professional development structure, and uses a framework to recognise and reward competence. It encourages clinical progression and was developed to link nursing competence with remuneration. The Practice Structure, based on the work of Patricia Benner (Benner, 1984), is made up of 4 levels: Beginner/Advance Beginner Practitioner, Competent Practitioner, Proficient Practitioner, Expert Practitioner. The Structure was reviewed in 1998, and a Steering Group was formed to collect feedback from nurses and midwives, identify areas of concern, and make recommendations for improvements. At the time of writing, these recommendations are being implemented and systems are being developed to ensure the Nursing and Midwifery Practice Structure continues to develop.

Abstract: The author discusses recent research on organisational psychopaths, and suggests it offers an explanation for the state of the health system since managerialism was ushered in through health reforms. She identifies personality traits of organisational psychopaths and of aberrant self-promoters. The author gives her experience of changes to the structure of nursing at a North Island metropolitan public hospital over an 8-year period.

Warren, S. (2002). Cultural safety, where does it fit? A literature review. Vision: A Journal of Nursing, 8(14), 27–30.
Abstract: This literature review discusses the history of the inclusion of culture into nursing studies. There is a small sample of overseas literature for critique with a focus on the inclusion of cultural safety in New Zealand. The concept of cultural safety was first introduced into New Zealand in the late 1980s. It was adopted by the New Zealand Nursing Council for nurses and midwives in 1992 and became part of the basic curriculum for nursing and midwifery education.
