Abstract |
Describes a national initiative to increase the capacity and capability of the Maori health workforce by supporting kaimahi (unregulated health workers) to become enrolled nurses (EN) delivering care within their communities. Uses Kaupapa Maori principles to create a strengths-based framework, focusing on self-determination and validating Matauranga Maori (Maori knowledge). Abstract |
Describes the behavioural and psychological symptoms associated with dementia, including depression, agitation, psychosis, hallucinations, delusions and apathy. Employs an integrative review to investigate why care-givers resort to anti-psychotic medication in the first instance instead of non-pharmacological interventions to manage such symptoms. Identifies three themes: low staff-to-patient ratios, insufficient specialised staff; inadequate understanding of the manifestations of dementia. |

Abstract |
Explores how workplace cyberbullying is understood and experienced in NZ, with a focus on nursing. Undertakes three-part qualitative, interview-based research to investigate how workplace cyberbullying manifests in nursing. Interviews eight nurses who had experienced bullying. Uncovers the risk of nurses experiencing cyberbullying from external sources such as students, patients, and patient relatives. Posits a multi-factor socio-ecological model as a framework to guide future research. |

Abstract |
Examines the experiences of the patient, their family and healthcare professionals during the trajectory of a prolonged critical illness in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Conducts a qualitative, instrumental, multi-case study informed by the Chronic Illness Trajectory Framework. Analyses data from six linked cases (patient, family and clinicians) in four ICUs over a two-year period. Argues that identifying the sub-phases of a prolonged critical illness trajectory allows targeted interventions for each sub-phase. |

Abstract |
Considers whether an educational intervention in which mental illness and addiction sufferers share their personal experience with nursing students results in the development of empathy and compassion among nursing students. Incorporates five workshops into the bachelor of nursing curriculum, in which students listen to the stories told by mental health/addiction patients. Gathers accounts from students of their reactions afterwards. |

Abstract |
Measures the extent to which health-care students began their training with compassionate attributes. Defines compassion as an awareness of others and a desire to help, using a non-judgmental approach. Highlights the significance of compassion in health care. Provides a self-administered 'compassion to others' psychometric scale to measure compassionate attributes to 146 students enrolled in the first semester of nursing, midwifery and social work at the Waikato Institute of Technology (Wintec). Analyses data using the SPSS and ANOVA for descriptive statistics and predictive information. |

Abstract |
Argues that teaching de-escalation skills early in the nursing programme is vital for student safety and later retention in the nursing workforce. Sets out to determine the efficacy of communication training to teach nursing students agression-management skills while on clinical placement. Designs a quasi-experimental design using pre- and post-tests of communication competence following an education module delivered as part of the curriculum. |

Abstract |
Examines designated registered nurse (RN) prescribing among community health nurses. Aims to understand how RN prescribers interact with other members of the health care team and to identify the social processes at play. Employs Bourdieu's 'Theory of Practice' to explore health care teams as competitive social spaces where health professionals vie to establish social position and authority. Recruits three health care teams representing primary health and specialty practice for interviews and observation. Highlights three themes from the data: social topography, working with an RN prescriber; and patterns of communication. |
