In 2006, Whitireia Community Polytechnic celebrates 20 years of tertiary education. Nursing was one of the first courses to start at the new Parumoana Community College in February 1986. Oral histories, gathered from the women who have been the leaders of the undergraduate nursing programme throughout these two decades, form the basis of this article. |

Abstract |
In this paper, the author explores the concept of 'professional terrorism'. He exposes discrimination against male nurses as being a form of professional terrorism, primarily as it is enacted through use of language. He presents the concept of horizontal violence as a way to understand why nurses, as a marginalised group, perform oppressive acts towards male nurses, who are similarly oppressed. He outlines the cost of such a culture on nursing practice and presents strategies for change. |

This paper outlines the historical development of the Postgraduate Certificate in Primary Health Care Specialty Nursing programme. The paper discusses the multiple contextual considerations for the programme in terms of New Zealand health policy direction, academic level, and appropriate level of competency development for nurses new to primary health care and newly graduated nurses. |
