Abstract: Assesses the safety of actively avoiding endotracheal suction in post-operative cardiac surgical patients ventilated for less than 12 hours. Describes local endotracheal suction practice, and elucidates patient experience of the endotracheal tube and endotracheal suction. Conducts an observational audit describing endotracheal sucion practice within the cardiothoracic and vascular intensive care unit in Auckland City Hospital. Undertakes a prospective, non-inferiority, randomised controlled trial investigating the safety of avoiding endotracheal suction.

Uses a qualitative approach with data collected through individual semi-structured interviews with preceptors and nurse managers. Due to lack of participation in the quantitative arm a mixed-method study was not completed using an anonymous survey. Undertakes thematic data analysis utilising NVIVO 10 software. Draws four major themes from the qualitative data: (1) Feedback- insight loop, (2) Process clarity, (3) Relationships, commitment & reflective response to participation in the SIP/PIP process, (4) Barriers and enablers to the SIP/PIP process.

Abstract: Examines levels of reported violence and aggression within a tertiary-level emergency department (ED) in NZ. Explores staff attitudes to violence and the reporting of it. Conducts a one-month intensive prospective audit of the reporting of violence and aggression within the ED. Compares results with previously-reported data, and finds that failure to report acts of violence is common. Highlights that emergency nurses are the primary targets of abuse and confirms the effect it has on retention.

Undertakes a nested sampling of two randomly-selected DNLCs, in which 71 participants were invited to participate. Explores patients' perspectives of attendance or non-attendance at their booked appointments. Examines whether patients perceive any benefits of attendance at the clinics, and identifies factors that might improve their experiences with DNLCs.
