Abstract: Interviews 9 nurses in their first year of clinical practice to investigate how newly-qualified nurses recognise and develop those skills relating to clinical risk and patient safety. Identifies workplace culture, clinical role models, exposure to the clinical environment, experiential learning, narrative sharing, debriefing and simulation as contributing to learning and understanding clinical risk and safe patient care. Considers strategies to facilitate professional development.

Abstract: The role of storytelling in any society fulfils multiple functions such as maintaining culture, holding history, teaching genealogical lessons, imparting wisdom, entertaining, passing on knowledge. The author suggests that nursing, historically described as a craft with an oral tradition, could be seen to be quietly moving away from the practice of storytelling. Or has it? She asked this question and began to realise that her practice and relationships with colleagues had always been based on stories and storying. To explore this phenomenon, she began to describe her day to day practice in story form, and began to position stories she had previously written. In her work of oncology palliative care nursing within a community setting in New Zealand, the stories proved crucial to her role as an educator, and companion of patients and their families. In this paper she examines how she uses story for her benefit, the patients' benefit, but mainly for the benefit of nursing. She examines from her own perspective, some underlying themes that reinforce the need to continue this ancient tradition and explore the role, value and function of storytelling within nursing.

Abstract: Health reforms, reviews and restructuring are not new to New Zealand nursing. The author notes that changes in the environment have created many pressures on nursing as a profession. The profession is trying to deal with this turmoil in a responsible fashion. It is also trying to grow and develop at the same time. This research is focused on finding the relationship between job and professional development. It also highlights the factors that affect job satisfaction and professional development.

Abstract: This thesis concerns the Professional Development Programme at Lakeland Health. In New Zealand, such programmes were introduced as a mechanism to openly recognise the clinical expertise of nurses. Clinical Career Pathways were introduced to nursing in North America in the 1970's at a time of nursing shortage. Prior to their inception, nurses wishing to develop their careers had to move to administration, management or education. The programmes recognised and rewarded expertise in practice. A qualitative, descriptive approach (using focus groups) was used with Registered Nurses to gather their perceptions of what helps nurses enroll in the Professional Development Programme. The ideas and insights of nine Registered Nurses were clustered around three main categories: The People (fear; being struck; motivation; feedback; peer support; ways of learning); the Programme (relevance; flexibility; Bachelor's Degrees; implementation; supporting information; fairness); the Place (time; regular and accessible; support from nurse leaders; management). These perceptions are discussed in more detail in the context of nursing at Lakeland Health and of Clinical Career Pathways in New Zealand. The findings are helpful for the evaluation and future development of the Professional Development at Lakeland Health. The research contributes to our understanding of what helps nurses enroll in a Clinical Career Pathway, and emphasises the importance of the People, the Programme and the Place.

Abstract: Explores the impact on nurses three to six years after completion of the New Entry to Specialty Practice (NESP) Programme. Thematically analyses in-depth, semi-structured interviews to identify the aspects of personal and professional development affected by the programme, using a qualitative descriptive approach. Focuses on four key themes: well set up; thinking differently; inter-connectedness; and reciprocation.

Abstract: Confronts the inherent conflict for nurse managers (NM) in the dual nature of their leadership role, the Professional Practice Model (PPM) and the Generic Management Model (GMM). Examines the challenges for NMs in trying to balance the conflicting requirements of their roles. Surveys five NMs about their main challenges: role confusion, expectations, support, and professional development. Contributes to the ongoing evolution of the NM role.

Abstract: The aim of this study was to explore the practice of flexible learning for postgraduate nurses. Flexible learning is a contemporary approach to learning that utilises the benefits of technology. Flexible learning can be understood as a continuum, from fully on-line or web-based courses, to those that are on-campus and supported by technology. Internationally, the rise of flexible learning has been influenced by increased demand for higher education and competition among providers within the context of reduced education funding. The study population, New Zealand postgraduate nurses, are accessing higher education in increasing numbers to advance their practice and to position themselves for new roles and opportunities. These are often experienced nurses yet inexperienced in higher university education, who combine study, work and other commitments. The study employed a qualitative case study design because it enabled multiple perspectives to be gained. Data included documentation, participant observation, survey, students' assessed work and interviews with key stakeholders: student, teacher and the organisation. Thematic analysis was conducted on reviewed documentation, participant observation and interviews. The study identifies the elements that contribute to flexible learning and the interconnectedness between the elements within the dynamic context of a university to illustrate that effective flexible learning can be provided by using a student centred approach to ensure the learning needs of postgraduate nurses are met. The author concludes that flexible learning improved access, choice, and provided an emphasis on the student as central to learning. In response to these findings the weighting of recommendations are toward the organisation as, the author suggests, it is at this level where greater change can be made to improve support for flexible learning provision.
