Abstract |
Case study research, as a qualitative methodology, attracts some criticism, especially related to rigour, reliability and validity. A New Zealand-based study that explored complex phenomena – flexible learning for postgraduate nurses – provides a practical example of how the case study design can address these criticisms. Through describing the mixed methods used, different sources and methods of data collection, and data analysis, the process of achieving data quality and trustworthiness are highlighted. |

Abstract |
This book examines in detail the confluence of personalities and professional and practice agendas, out of which emerged the research section, intent on placing research at the centre of the profession's evolution. It provides a fascinating look at how a group of women, utterly committed to nursing, drove their research agenda and it expands understandings of why nursing research is significant for the development of nursing. It also provides an insight into that web of relationships between the professional body, NZNA, the Department of Health, service delivery and education.

Abstract |
This research aims to design and test the feasibility of an intervention promoting smoking cessation, and reducing smoking relapse, among Māori nurses who smoke. It is being conducted in two phases. Phase one, a national web-based survey, conducted in December 2012, explored the views of Māori nurses (smokers, ex-smokers and non-smokers) regarding smoking. This paper reports on the analysis of qualitative responses from 410 nurses and nursing students identifying as Māori who completed an online survey. Five themes were identified: beliefs about smoking; ?for our tamariki?; personal stories of quitting; dissatisfaction with current approaches; and plans for future strategies. The findings confirm that nurses who smoke may experience feelings of conflict, and regard their behaviour as inconsistent with their role as nurses and health promoters. Nurses who smoke must be supported to become, and to stay, smokefree. Tailored Māori-specific cessation initiatives are needed. |

Reports on one aspect of a larger study, which used qualitative methods to critically explore the social construction of men as nurses. Draws upon literature pertaining to gender and nursing, and interviews with 18 NZ men, to describe the factors underpinning decisions to turn away from 'malestream' occupations and enter a profession stereotyped as 'women's work'. Outlines the five thematic groupings revealed to be significant with respect to the decision-making process. |

Explores nurses' perceptions about their direction and delegation experiences using a narrative approach, reflecting the importance of story in nursing. Uses the methodology and methods of narrative research to uncover how Enrolled and Registered Nurses understand the knowledge, skills and attitudes required during delegation interactions and how they applied this understanding to their communication. Identifies eight patterns, presented as eight narratives, that emerged from interviews with Enrolled and Registered Nurses, and the implications for nursing practice, research, policy design, and nursing education. |
