This contemporary historical study examines the health sector environment of the 1990s and the turn of the 21st century, and assesses the policy initiatives undertaken to advance nursing in New Zealand during that period. The authors look at the conditions and forces that saw nursing achieve a new emphasis on advanced and expanded scope of nursing practice, less than a decade after the commencement of New Zealand's first pre-registration nursing degrees. |

Conducts thematic analysis to identify two predominant gender scripts: of nursing as women's work, and that men who nurse are homosexual. Notes the associated themes of the effect of negative stereotyping on male nurses' career choice, and their resistance to the stereotype of normative masculinity. Considers that the same barriers to men becoming nurses have remained unchanged since first identified and discussed in the 1960s. |

Considers whether the Canterbury Dedicated Education Unit model of clinical teaching and learning can support graduate registered nurses in their first year of practice. Uses a descriptive exploratory case-study approach to gather data via three focus groups with a total of eleven participants. Undertakes thematic analysis to identify patterned meaning across the dataset from which two primary themes emerge: support, and recruitment and retention. Identifies five associated sub-themes: peer support, organisational support, liaison nurse support, team support for the graduate registered nurses, and team support for the staff. Reveals the significant contribution made by the Nurse Entry-to-Practice Programme Liaison Nurse as a conflict broker. |

Examines the experience of nurses who had been out of nursing for more than five years, and explores factors that influenced their leaving and return to practice. Invites nurses who had undertaken a Competency Assessment Programme at a given tertiary institution during 2005 to participate. Analyses and codes quantitative data for 32 nurses who completed the questionnaire, and identifies the three key issues that emerge. |

Abstract |
This article summarises the current level of knowledge regarding dietary effects on serum cholesterol. Information from a literature review was used to design a table that identifies how changes in diet and activity can alter components of a person's lipid profile. Nurses can use the resulting table as a simple tool to give clients targeted education based on their individual cholesterol results. This tool illustrates that not all dietary recommendations to the public are beneficial to serum cholesterol levels and it also explains why popular diets such as the Atkins, Mediterranean, and glycaemic index / load can produce more cardio-protective profiles than the traditional low fat diet. |

Explores nurses' experiences of caring for patients who have had surgery for oral cavity cancer in one NZ hospital, involving wound care, tracheostomy management, oral care, ongoing patient education and the provision of emotional support to patients and families. Interviews three registered nurses about the challenges involved in caring for this patient group; their moral conflict over the effects of surgery on the patients; their professional uncertainty, and the emotional effort involved in nursing oral cavity cancer patients. Suggests the need for informal debriefing, grief counselling, clinical supervision, stress management training, and continuing education in this specialised role. |

Aims to identify whether female smokers referred to the colposcopy department at a city hospital required more follow-up visits, treatments and re-referrals than did non-smokers. Performs a retrospective descriptive study observing 494 new patients over 6 years. Identifies the percentage of Maori women attending the clinic who were smokers and their likelihood of non-attendance. Emphasises the need for smoke-free education for women that highlights the link between smoking and cervical cancer. |

The report of an exploratory study of current approaches to case management by nurses as requested by the College of Nurses Aotearoa New Zealand. It revealed different interpretations of nurse case management around New Zealand and in the US, UK and Australia. They differed according to the conceptualisation of health service design and delivery in the respective country. Case management in New Zealand in general presented nurse care management roles as an interface between the mangement of health service delivery and the peculiarities of the healthcare people received, holding the potential for achieving tailored, patient-centred care outcomes. |

An overview of the model of nursing practice and nurse roles derived through a programme of nursing research in the context of the changing New Zealand health system. The emphasis is on the complementary nature of the practice of family nurses taking a generic integrative service delivery hub role and the practice of other nurses advancing in specialist roles. Nursing care is presented as a professional, collective practice of registered nurses spread across all health service sectors and employment settings. Nurse roles are differentiated according to the interplay of two factors influencing the extent of practice autonomy the nurses assume (educationally supported) in responding to health need. A diagram depicts the interrelationship of competency and scope for the inclusive three different career trajectories of nurses advancing in practice. NOTE: This paper was published with an error in the title of the article (stated correctly on the journal contents page).
