Abstract: Undertakes to explain the experiences of new graduate registered nurses (NGRN) undertaking a nurse entry-to-practice programme (NETP). Uses focus group data to construct a theory of NGRN experience, utilising constructivist grounded theory method. Interviews NGRNs in the Waikato DHB NETP, which uses a bicultural model. Concludes that NGRNs value culture in assessing patient need. Identifies barriers to valuing patients' culture from short staffing, stress and fear, work pressuress, and lack of insight into the cultural needs of patients from team members.

Abstract: Develops a daily measure of job satisfaction in the operating room (OR) setting in the form of a tool called the Morale-o-Meter. Trials and evaluates the tool between 2018-2019, inviting all OR staff to participate using the tool to measure their job satisfaction once each shift. Follows up the trial with an online feedback survey. Proves that overall job satisfaction is positively related to daily job satisfaction and affective commitment, and negatively related to emotional exhaustion. Suggests the Morale-o-Meter has the potential to increase the voice of OR nurses.

working in managed isolation and quarantine facilities (MIQFs)in Aotearoa New Zealand. Conducts 14 semi-structured interviews, via Zoom, with registered nurses working in MIQFs, focusing on the personal and social impacts on the nurses. Identifies four themes: protecting the community while being a risk to the community; social stigma; families and social connections; being part of, but apart from, other health professionals. Underlines the importance for employers, colleagues, and the wider community of supporting nurses during a pandemic.

Abstract: Conducts thematic analysis to identify two predominant gender scripts: of nursing as women's work, and that men who nurse are homosexual. Notes the associated themes of the effect of negative stereotyping on male nurses' career choice, and their resistance to the stereotype of normative masculinity. Abstract: Uncovers the significance for nurses who were trained within the 1970s apprenticeship model in NZ hospitals, in their present understanding of themselves as nurses. Confirms that the 1970s heralded the beginning of the end of the apprenticeship system of nurse training, and that literature related to this era of general student nurse training is limited. Uses philosophical hermeneutics to guide interviews with 15 former student nurses who trained within the Auckland Hospital Board School of Nursing, and who reflect 40 years afterward, on how their apprenticeship training influenced the type of nurses they became.

Abstract: Comprises three essays on the economics of health-care delivery in hospitals: considers the relationship between gender and/or ethnic concordance between a doctor and patient, and the number of diagnostic tests ordered during a hospital stay; estimates the impact of doctor-patient demographic concordance (where doctor and patient share the same ethnic group and/or gender) on a doctor's decision-making for diagnostic resources and medical treatments; calculates the relationship between ward-level nursing hours and a patient's health outcome, e.g. mortality and length of ward stay. Uses a detailed nursing-staff dataset, a novel instrumental variable for nursing hours (the amount of sick and bereavement leave taken by nurses on a ward) and the separate effect of nursing and patient hours in a ward, on a patient's health outcome.

Explores patients' perspectives of attendance or non-attendance at their booked appointments. Examines whether patients perceive any benefits of attendance at the clinics, and identifies factors that might improve their experiences with DNLCs.
