Abstract: Interviews 14 participants, 10 older and experienced health professionals, and four managers. Describes the lived experience of health professionals ageing at work, and of the managers interacting with them. Demonstrates that the ability of older practitioners to adapt to meet the ongoing physical demands of practice and their shifting workplace environment determines whether they will be valued at work and remain in their roles.

Investigates which nurse allocation policy between PART and ICU would result in the best outcomes for patients and hospitals. Provides econometric models to estimate the impact of critical care nurses on hospital length of stay. Proposes queueing and simulation models to obtain the optimal nurse allocation policy for minimising the ICU mortality rate. Validates proposed models at Middlemore Hospital from 2015 to 2016. Abstract: Performs an explanatory sequential mixed-methods study comprising a questionnaire followed by interviews, to understand the experiences and preparedness of nurse educators in working with Maori nursing students. Demonstrates that throughout NZ, nursing schools and the educational institutes in which they are situated are informed by a range of strategies aimed at supporting Maori learners. Finds from interviews that environments encompassing te ao Maori (the Maori world) and staff practises that aligned with this were enabling for Maori nursing students.

Abstract: Uncovers the significance for nurses who were trained within the 1970s apprenticeship model in NZ hospitals, in their present understanding of themselves as nurses. Confirms that the 1970s heralded the beginning of the end of the apprenticeship system of nurse training, and that literature related to this era of general student nurse training is limited. Uses philosophical hermeneutics to guide interviews with 15 former student nurses who trained within the Auckland Hospital Board School of Nursing, and who reflect 40 years afterward, on how their apprenticeship training influenced the type of nurses they became.

Undertakes a nested sampling of two randomly-selected DNLCs, in which 71 participants were invited to participate. Explores patients' perspectives of attendance or non-attendance at their booked appointments. Examines whether patients perceive any benefits of attendance at the clinics, and identifies factors that might improve their experiences with DNLCs.

Abstract: Uses an instrumental case study to explore the role of Advanced Choice of Employment (ACE) on the decision to enter the Nurse Entry to Specialised Practice (NESP). Examines the NESP programme in one DHB in which 14 participants who had accepted positions on NESP without specifying the specialty were given semi-structured interviews, as was the NESP coordinator about the employer experience of NESP. Suggests how education providers and DHBs can prepare ACE applicants for the recruitment process.
