Abstract: This article discusses a child/adolescent-centred primary nocturnal enuresis program and service that is administered by a group of public health nurses in South Auckland. Enuresis is the involuntary passing of urine. Many children and adolescents who are nocturnal enuretics exhibit behaviours such as low self-esteem, withdrawal, less ambition and increased anxiety. These children are often low achievers within the school system and become a problem for their family and school.

Uses a qualitative usability study methodology to conduct the study, centred on a small group of clients receiving the service from a small group of clients receiving the service from a community nursing organisation in Christchurch. Involves patients, pharmacists, nurses and managers of the community nursing service. Identifies critical processes and protocols required to safely support a wider roll-out of the product within the service.

Abstract: The aim of this small qualitative descriptive pilot study was to describe the experiences of practice nurses delivering the Care Plus programme within the general practice setting. Care Plus was introduced into Primary Health Organisations (PHOs) in 2004. This programme encourages more involvement from practice nurses in chronic care management. For many New Zealand practice nurses this is a new role. This study, carried out prior to the larger Care Plus implementation review (2006), provides an insight into the nursing experience of implementing Care Plus and provides a basis for future studies with regard to the nurse's role within the Care Plus programme.

Abstract: The author notes that learning nurses require real clinical experiences in order to apply learnt theory to actual practice. Clinical learning environments have consistently been found to function variably and sub-optimally for both learners and teachers. In order to improve the quality of the clinical learning environment it is necessary to first evaluate how effectively a clinical learning environment is functioning. A number of different methodologies have been used to evaluate clinical learning environments, a recent and successful method being the use of questionnaires or clinical learning environment evaluation tools. The objective of the present study was to develop clinical learning environment evaluation tools for use in a New Zealand hospital health service. Four tools appropriate to evaluate the clinical learning environment from the different perspectives of any type of clinical learner, clinical teacher, clinical manager and programme co-ordinator or nurse lecturer were developed. Six newly graduated nurses, three senior nurses, and the researcher were involved in the development of the evaluation tools over a five month period. A participatory action research methodology was employed. The resultant tools had a unique local focus and were suitably similar to other internationally developed tools. After testing the clinical learning environment evaluation tools, it is hoped that the implementation of the tools will support all stakeholders to understand and consequently optimise the functionality of their clinical learning environment.

Abstract: This chapter introduces national policies and strategies that promote interdisciplinary collaboration as a means of providing better access to health care for all communities. It identifies a role for advancing nursing practice as part of a collaborative approach to healthcare in rural areas. An increasing focus on collaboration as a concept within health practice during the last 10 years has become evident in policy documents from the Report of the Ministerial Taskforce on Nursing (Ministry of Health, 1998) to the Working Party for After Hours Primary Health Care (Ministry of Health, 2005). The emphasis would seem to be in response to political pressure to address health inequalities and an apparent assumption that interprofessional collaboration results in improved communication, fewer gaps in provision of care and more effective use of the limited health funds.

Abstract: Presents the results of a stop-smoking trial using a financial incentive to assist Maori nursing students and a whanau quit-mate to quit smoking. Conducts a marae-based 24-week programme of cessation support with financial incentives in the form of scholarship payments awarded to students incrementally based on proven smoking cessation of both quit mates. Uses focus groups at two points in the programme with students and their quit mates and administers a questionnaire to students at the end of the programme.

Abstract: The author explores possible approaches to the ethical dilemma confronting nurses of critically ill premature infants with an uncertain or futile outcome despite aggressive neonatal intensive care. A case history illustrates the issues. The morality of nursing decisions based on deontological and utilitarian principles is examined, as are the concepts of beneficence and non-maleficence. A fusion of virtue ethics and the ethic of care is suggested as appropriate for ethical decision-making in the neonatal intensive care environment.

Abstract: Clinical studies on adult ventilated patients demonstrate that bacterial contamination of the condensate occurs in ventilator circuits. The purpose of this research is to find out if this is also true of the condensate in the Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) circuit. It aims to determine whether there is bacterial contamination in the humidifier reservoir of the CPAP system when the condensate is drained back into the humidifier reservoir without disconnecting the circuit, or when the inspiratory tubing is disconnected to drain out the condensate.
