Abstract: This study aims to identify work related factors contributing to New Zealand nurses' intent to leave the job. Two hundred and seventy five surveys (response rate = 68.8%) from a random sample of 400 nurses employed in one district health board were used to explore intent to leave the job. Three research questions directed the description of levels of job satisfaction, job stress, and burnout found in nurse participants, correlations between the three variables, and the identification of variables predicting intent to leave the job through regression analyses. The survey found levels of job satisfaction were high, job stress was low, and burnout was average. Specifically, lack of opportunity to participate in organisational decision making, control over work conditions, control over what goes on in the work setting (key Magnet Hospital characteristics) were not evident, and with pay rates, were the main sources of job dissatisfaction. Workload was the most frequently experienced source of stress by nurse participants. Twenty-five per cent of nurse participants reported high levels of intent to leave the job. Correlations suggested that reductions in job satisfaction influenced increases in job stress and burnout. Job stress was associated with increases in emotional exhaustion. Emotional exhaustion was influenced by eight job satisfaction, job stress, and burnout subscales. Five subscales (professional opportunities, praise and recognition, interaction opportunities, extrinsic rewards, lack of support) explained 26.2% of the variance in nurse participant's intent to leave. The author concludes that issues of power and control were associated with job dissatisfaction, job stress and burnout in nursing practice. However, predictors of intent to leave the job suggest a growing realisation by nurse participants that postgraduate education and nursing research may provide the tools to create positive change in the health care environment and make nursing visible, valued and appropriately rewarded.

Abstract: Backgrounds the primary health care initiative, the Transitional Care Nursing service, which aims to facilitate integrated care between primary, secondary and community health care services. Explores whether support in the form of the Transitional Care Nursing service influences the experience of patients who receive assistance during the transition between hospital and home. Conducts qualitative, semi-structured interviews with 12 patients whose responses are thematically analysed. Highlights the characteristics of care offered by Transitional Care nurses that describe the person-centred care patients received.

Abstract: Draws on a conversation between Wood and Adams, both tauiwi (non-Maori) academics, exploring challenges, innovations, and paradigms of care at a time in NZ history when colonising processes had already affected Maori. Traces the origins of rural, district and Plunket nursing. Provides insight into the structure and content of the book, its value in recording the history, proactive leadership, and practice of modern nursing as instigated by the British nursing diaspora.

Abstract: Identifies cohorting as a culturally-responsive teaching and learning strategy, which in the case of a Bachelor of Health Science Nursing programme led to whanaungatanga (connection), tikanga (correct practice), wananga (learning conversation), and manaakitanga (ethic of care) among the Maori cohorts. Conducts focus groups with students in years two and three of the programme to explore their experiences.

Abstract: Argues that nurses undertaking doctoral research have a responsibility to ensure their research engages with international nursing research and is relevant post-doctorally. Distinguishes between the purpose of PhDs and Professional Doctorates. Finds that nursing doctoral graduates are impeded from assuming leading roles in funded research. Attempts to find ways to address this challenge, suggesting that remote attendance at conferences and Internet communication with nurse researchers overseas encourages an international perspective on nursing topics. Abstract: Provides a critical reflection on the integration of empirical learning with the literature on integrative reviews. Avers that in undertaking an integrative review, Granduate Entry Nursing students learn how nursing care is based in evidence-based practice. Considers the common problems for nursing students which make supervisory oversight necessary at every stage. Draws on the experiences of three academic supervisors with threshold concepts to suggest that incorporating a research identity into students' developing nursing identity enhances evidence-informed practice.

Abstract: Invites pre-registration nursing and medical students to write down questions to ask of students in the other discipline. Provides these questions for discussion in a facilitated interprofessional group session. Uses descriptive thematic analysis to inductively analyse the written data, from which three themes emerged: lack of knowledge about each profession, misperceptions about the other profession, and the desire to develop interprofessional relationships.
