Abstract: Develops an understanding of the experiences of, and barriers for Pacific peoples in Canterbury utilising palliative care services. Considers the strengths and enablers for Pacific peoples accessing palliative care services and how such services, including home based palliative care, could better serve this community. Undertakes interviews using a semi-structured question guide, with nine family members who had provided palliative care within the last three years.

Abstract: Identifies how traditional nursing practice in Maori communities may be enhanced. Highlights the need for nursing to broaden concepts of health, community, and public health nursing, to focus on issues of capacity-building, community needs, and a broader understanding of the social, political, cultural, and economic contexts of the communities primary health-care nurses serve. Explores how health is experienced by Maori women during in-depth interviews using critical ethnographic method, underpinned by a Maori-centred approach. Articulates a model of health that is a dynamic process based on the restoration and maintenance of cultural integrity, derived from the principle of self-determination.

Abstract: Explores the NZ context underpinning adequate specialist nurse workforce supply, contending that effective workforce planning would be supported by the
development of a single unified framework for specialist nursing practice in NZ, with the potential to support accurate data collection and to enable service providers to identify and plan transparent and transferable pathways for specialist nursing service provision and development. Argues that advanced practice nursing frameworks assist in increasing productivity through building an evidence base about advanced practice, enhancing consistency and equity of expertise, supporting a reduction in role duplication, and enabling succession planning and sustainability.

Abstract: The author notes that it is widely accepted that there is a global shortage of nurses, and there are many studies in the health workforce literature about the negative aspects of nurse work environments, nursing workloads, decreased job satisfaction of nurses and the impact these have on patient health outcomes. In the past five years there has also been international and New Zealand-specific research into the effects of health restructuring on nursing leadership, retention of nurses, and on patient care. Much of this research has shown that countries with very different health care systems have similar problems, not only with retention of qualified nursing staff due to high levels of job dissatisfaction, but also with work design and the provision of good quality patient care in hospitals. This dissertation explores the many detrimental effects on nurses and nursing leadership, of extensive, and continuing, public health restructuring in New Zealand. The context of this dissertation is New Zealand public hospitals, with references pertaining to medical and surgical areas of nursing practice. Health reforms have negatively impacted on patient care delivery systems, patient health outcomes, and retention of educated nurses in the workforce. In order to resolve these issues, coordinated efforts are required in New Zealand district health boards to develop and sustain effective nursing leaders, who will promote and assist in the development of strong, healthy organisational cultures to retain and support professional nurses and the ways in which they wish to practise.

Abstract: Explores and describes the experiences of RNs who have a disability or impairment, in their interactions with colleagues and managers in clinical practice. Discovers strategies used by them to ensure safe practice. Conducts 60-90-minute interviews with 10 RNs who identified as living with a disability or impairment.

Abstract: Undertakes to explain the experiences of new graduate registered nurses (NGRN) undertaking a nurse entry-to-practice programme (NETP). Uses focus group data to construct a theory of NGRN experience, utilising constructivist grounded theory method. Interviews NGRNs in the Waikato DHB NETP, which uses a bicultural model. Concludes that NGRNs value culture in assessing patient need. Identifies barriers to valuing patients' culture from short staffing, stress and fear, work pressuress, and lack of insight into the cultural needs of patients from team members.

Abstract: Reports a qualitative, single-centre descriptive study of the experiences of nurses
working in managed isolation and quarantine facilities (MIQFs)in Aotearoa New Zealand. Conducts 14 semi-structured interviews, via Zoom, with registered nurses working in MIQFs, focusing on the personal and social impacts on the nurses. Identifies four themes: protecting the community while being a risk to the community; social stigma; families and social connections; being part of, but apart from, other health professionals. Underlines the importance for employers, colleagues, and the wider community of supporting nurses during a pandemic.

Abstract: Asks what is the value of randomised ccontrolled trials (RCT), and argues that different trial designs are appropriate for different types of question, e.g. intervention, aetiology, diagnosis, prognosis, therapy, and experience. Backgrounds the formation of the Cochrane Collaboration. Relates the author's own experience in becoming a clinical triallist and considers the barriers to nurses running RCTs. Explains the need and intent of the Australasian Nursing and Midwifery Clinical Trials Network (ANMCTN)
