Abstract: Nursing students have only recently learnt in-depth physical assessment skills within degree programmes in New Zealand. The purpose of this qualitative study was to describe the experience of learning physical assessment skills for the first time from the student's experience. In exploring this experience it was hoped to uncover some of the factors, beneficial or not, which influence their learning process. Data was collected by two methods. Firstly through two non-participant observations of a class of sixteen pre-registration male and female nursing students at an urban tertiary institute. Secondly through taped in-depth interviews with a female and a male student, from the group, individually and then together. The data was analysed using coding categories suggested by Bogdan and Biklen (1992) and emerging themes related to the process of learning new knowledge and skills. The four themes identified were: students working at learning, tutors facilitating learning, students facilitating learning and learning in clinical practice

Walker, J. Problem based learning: an action research study on the effectiveness of classroom activities.
Abstract: Problem based learning (PBL) has been used in a Bachelor of Nursing course since 1996 and several modifications to this delivery have been made. These changes were in response to concerns from students and tutors that students knowledge level was not appropriate and they were unable to apply this knowledge to their practice. The pure PBL process has been adapted to gradually move from tutor direction to self-direction. This has enabled students to develop critical thinking, problem solving, information retrieval and evaluation skills and group work skills over an 18-week period.However, no rigorous evaluation of these changes had been undertaken and so the purpose of this study was to evaluate how the current format of PBL was meeting students learning needs. An action research method was chosen as most relevant to the context and the questions posed, namely: How useful are the classroom activities in developing students understanding and integration of knowledge? How well do the students perceive they are learning compared to traditional teacher-centred methods?Two cycles of the action research method (Cardno and Piggot-Irvine, 1994) were used, involving four tutors and 17 students. Data was collected both quantitatively and qualitatively. Findings indicated the importance of: explaining the purpose and process of PBL; communicating in detail the role of both students and tutors; keeping communication open between students and tutors; addressing timetabling issues and valuing this method of learning for nursing practice. Implications for nursing education are addressed

Abstract: This modified action research inquiry focused on the everyday, palliative care practice experiences of a group of district nurses. The intent was to develop an understanding of common issues of concern for this group of district nurses when providing palliative home care in a specific community context and to implement practical, achievable strategies in response to these local issues. Five district nurses identified four broad areas for action through four praxis group meetings and comprising one full cycle. These four areas have been named as methods of enhancing support for people and families, possibilities for creatively managing workloads, mechanisms to enrich working partnership with other palliative care providers and possible vehicles for supporting nurses' self care. Implementation of action from this action research project focused on enhancing care and outcomes for people and family served by this group of district nurses in their local community. This study illuminates everyday essences of the district nurse role and the elements articulated by this group in supporting their practice in one New Zealand community. This study also reveals some of the tensions and messiness when employing an action research methodology with nurses in the workplace. The author notes that this research focused on a little known area (palliative care delivered by district nurses in New Zealand) in a local community (a culturally vibrant and ethnically diverse yet with poor health and socioeconomic statistics). She goes on to say that it has resonance with other nurses, particularly those working in community settings who may experience similar issues and concerns. This research also offers important insights for nurses working in any practice setting.

Abstract: The second, biennial survey of NZNO members based on the RCN longitudinal survey. A snapshot of the employment, views and morale of the New Zealand Nursing workforce.
Comparisons with the 2009 survey show an increase in job insecurity, experience of restructuring, and continuing differences in wages and turnover in the different sectors of the workforce.
The Enrolled Nurse membership in particular is in the midst of change, opportunity and disquiet. While the profession continues to be in good heart, there are some concerns about loss of senior nursing positions, and lack of suitable posts for new graduates.

Abstract: This clinical case study takes an integrated approach to investigation and critical analysis of the complex physiological and pathophysiological treatment modalities instigated when a patient presents following acute traumatic head injury. A broad overview of the developmental physiology of the brain and an explanation of the mechanism of traumatic brain injury as it relates to alterations in cerebral blood flow, intracranial pressure and cerebral metabolism is presented. The author describes in narrative form the clinical presentation of a patient, her symptoms and initial treatment rationale. It concludes with analysis of the patients initial treatment priorities and symptom management during the first 48 hours of her care.

Abstract: This research draws on the experiences of four women whilst they were inpatients at the Mental Health Unit in Southland. The Husserlian path of phenomenology was followed and in-depth interviewing used to collect data. Colaizzi's method of analysis enabled accurate interpretation of transcripts. The overall goal of this research was to provide health professionals with an opportunity to inform their practice, based on what consumers were saying about their experience of hospitalisation. Themes emerged through participants relating their experience by using comparisons with either their outside world or previous episodes of hospitalisation. Through analysis, two fundamental structures became evident within the findings. These were 'the environment as containment' and 'the road to recovery'. The author concludes that this study raises significant issues surrounding the experience of hospitalisation at the Mental Health Unit that have implications for future research and for future service delivery.
