Abstract: Historical facts from 1881 pertaining to Wellington Hospital, and the training of nurses, commencing with the employment of unpaid Lady Nurses, the conditions of employment for probationers (circa 1883), the formal teaching of probationers 1888, progressing to a three year training, and, with Miss Ellen Dougherty a Wellington trainee being the first registered nurse in the world in 1901. Management of the 1880's and 90's appears a little strange, not employing their own trainees, nor appointing Miss Dougherty as matron, when she had been acting matron.Extrapolation of historical facts to give a probable characterisation of the unpaid Lady nurses and the day in the life of a probationer nurse of these times.Inferences suggest that nursing in New Zealand had military rather than religious origins and, perhaps Misses Selena Sutherland and Dougherty were not lady like enough to be employed by Wellington Hospital!

Abstract: This was a retrospective study of 100 Auckland people suffering from cancer in their terminal year. It aimed firstly to report the development of limitations in daily living activities and of dependence on help, and secondly to develop a method of assessing the functions of both patients and those who cared for them in such a way that support services could be matched to needs. The observations showed problems of progressive disability and dependence, which varied with the age of the patient and the type of malignancy. They showed clearly the long lasting emotional problems of the careers after the patients' death

Determines the relationship between three aspects of organisational climate -- nursing relationships, charge-nurse manager leadership, and staff organisation -- and early-career nurses' perceptions of job satisfaction and burnout. Receives 91 responses to a mixed-method survey. Identifies significant themes that emerged from thematic analysis: supervisor support, emotional labour, workload and staffing relations.

Abstract: This research is a study of the experiences of four cultural safety educators in nursing education in Aotearoa, New Zealand. Action research methods assisted the participants to implement change in their practice and gain positive personal involvement in the study. Reflective diaries provided the major tool in this process as participants were able to achieve at least one action research cycle by identifying issues, planning action, observing the action, and reflecting. The findings of the research revealed that the participants not only coped with everyday stressors of teaching but were also required to formulate knowledge for cultural safety. For the Maori participants, their stress was confounded with recruiting and retaining Maori students and macro issues such as commitment to their iwi (tribe). Lack of support to teach cultural safety was identified to be a key theme for all participants. An analysis of this theme revealed that many issues were organisational in nature and out of their control. Action research provided a change strategy for participants to have a sense of control of issues within their practice. Recommendations include the following: support for cultural safety educators to have a dialogue on a regular basis, the introduction of nurse educator programmes, paid leave provisions for educators to conduct and publish research so that a body of knowledge can be developed, and that Maori cultural safety educators be recognised for their professional and cultural strengths so that they do not fall victim to burnout.

Abstract: This paper outlines a phenomenological study carried out to explore the experience of nausea, vomiting and retching associated with pregnancy. These phenomena lack Nursing research and are debilitating symptoms which effect the quality of life for 50-75% of all pregnant women. Madjar ( 1991) indicates that the communication of such experiences can deepen our understanding of human life and coping. It is importance for Nurses to develop an understanding of lived experiences so that they can make more effective interventions. This study explores the essential humanness of life experiences as they are for those who live them. It involved collecting data from those experiencing the phenomena and analysing it. It focuses on the study of phenomena not as separate entities in themselves but as they are perceived as they are experienced. A 'purposeful sample' was required for this study. The aim was to include women who had direct knowledge of the phenomena of nausea, vomiting and retching associated with pregnancy. The study involved in depth interviewing of six women, the interviews were taped and independently transcribed, the transcripts were analysed to determine the meaning of the experience and to identify common themes. The experiences of the women are discussed in relation to what van Manen (1990) describes as four main life world existentials; the lived body, the lived other, lived space and lived time
