Distributes a practitioner attitudes survey to 112 specialist doctors and 153 ICU nurses. Performs both inception and retrospective cohort studies using the Australian and NZ ICU adult patient database before, and post-publication of the ICU-ROX trial results.

Abstract: Offers a NZ perspective on direction and delegation, a professional competency required of all NZ nurses. Explores nurses' perceptions about their direction and delegation experiences using a narrative approach, reflecting the importance of story in nursing. Uses the methodology and methods of narrative research to uncover how Enrolled and Registered Nurses understand the knowledge, skills and attitudes required during delegation interactions and how they applied this understanding to their communication. Identifies eight patterns, presented as eight narratives, that emerged from interviews with Enrolled and Registered Nurses, and the implications for nursing practice, research, policy design, and nursing education.

Wilson, H. V. (2001). Power and partnership: A critical analysis of the surveillance discourses of child health nurses. Journal of Advanced Nursing, 36(2), 294–301.
Abstract: The aim of this research was to explore surveillance discourses within New Zealand child health nursing and to identify whether surveillance practices have implications in this context for power relations. Five experienced and practising Plunket nurses were each interviewed twice. The texts generated by these semi-structured interviews were analysed using a Foucauldian approach to critical discourse analysis. In contrast with the conventional view of power as held and wielded by one party, this study revealed that, in the Plunket nursing context, power is exercised in various and unexpected ways. Although the relationship between the mother and the nurse cannot be said to operate as a partnership, it is constituted in the nurses' discourses as a dynamic relationship in which the mother is actively engaged on her own terms. The effect of this is that it is presented by the nurses as a precarious relationship that has significant implications for the success of their work.

Abstract: This report presents an evaluation of the implementation of a best practice information sheet related to tracheal suctioning of adults with an artificial airway. The Centre for Evidence-Based Nursing Aotearoa, based in Auckland, conducted a systematic review of the evidence and produced the best practice information sheet. A survey of 105 nurses was conducted at three sites, in New Zealand and Australia. Using a before/after design, data were collected at the time of release of the information sheet and then approximately 12 months later. The study suggests a trend towards a modest uptake of best practice recommendations into nursing practice demonstrated by some behavioural changes within a 12-month period in the context of an implementation plan and the best practice information sheet.

Abstract: This paper discusses how students become able to work with sick patients for whom they may feel disgust or discomfort. It is a sustained engagement with the literature on abjection and disgust and is not the outcome of evaluation research. It considers the role of problem-based learning pedagogy in facilitating students' negotiation of their own discomfort and horror, and describes experiences which enable them to approach abject patients with more comfort and less disgust. The paper argues the importance of creating spaces where students can explore issues which are distressing and disturbing so that they will feel able to remain in nursing.

Abstract: The author has taken a broad approach to this research to explore the views of Generation Y New Zealand Registered Nurses towards the nursing profession, the work itself and their career plans. This study arose out of the author?s interest in health care workforce planning for nursing and in particular the retention of young nurses given the current national and global shortage of nurses. Because of the broad and descriptive nature of the research, a wide variety of topics are included in the literature reviewed.
Chapter one provides background to the study and an overview of generational cohorts.
Chapter two explores selected literature relevant to the concept of work and the characteristics of the Generation Y workforce.
Other topics included in this chapter include Herzberg?s work motivation hygiene/maintenance theory and a selection of literature about key workforce recruitment and retention issues.

Wilson, H. V. (2003). Paradoxical pursuits in child health nursing practice: Discourses of scientific mothercraft. Critical Public Health, 13(3), 281–293.
Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to examine the discourses of scientific mothercraft and their implications for the nurse-mother relationship, drawing on the author's recent research into surveillance and the exercise of power in the child health nursing context. The application of Foucauldian discourse analysis to the texts generated by interviews with five New Zealand child health nurses confirms that this paradoxical role has never been fully resolved. Plunket nurses primarily work in the community with the parents of new babies and preschool children. Their work, child health surveillance, is considered to involve routine and unproblematic practices generally carried out in the context of a relationship between the nurse and the mother. However, there are suggestions in the literature that historically the nurse's surveillance role has conflicting objectives, as she is at the same time an inspector and family friend.

Abstract: This qualitative study investigated surgical nurses' perceptions of patient-controlled analgesia as a strategy for managing acute pain in a tertiary care hospital. Patient-controlled analgesia is commonly used and nurses play an essential role in caring for patients prescribed it. The study was divided into two parts. First, audiotaped semi-structured interviews were conducted with 10 nurses. The interviews were followed by a postal questionnaire to 336 nurses with 171 returned. Thematic analysis was the chosen methodology. The audiotaped transcripts and questionnaires surfaced five themes, with the dominant one being `I think PCA is great, but . . .'. The paper outlines and explores these themes and addresses the implications arising from the research for both clinical practice and education.
