Abstract: Aims to explore the experiences of younger women who have had a stroke to understand their experience and support needs, using a qualitative description approach and conducting a focus group discussion to collect data. Enrols five participants aged 18 to 64 years at the time of stroke, to collect data from which four themes and 11 sub-themes emerged. Notes the complexity of younger women's burdens after stroke.

Abstract: The NZNO Younger Nurse survey examined the characteristics of younger nurse members of NZNO (aged under 30) in order to identify potential recruitment and retention strategies for these nurses, and provide information on how best to support younger members to become involved in NZNO activities.
The findings indicate that while most younger nurses enjoy their work and find it rewarding, they also face a range of challenges in the workplace due to their age ? including bullying and poor choice of shifts. Many younger nurses do not feel appropriately paid for the work they do and believe there are insufficient nurses to provide safe care. Over 10 percent of younger nurses are considering leaving the nursing profession. Many younger nurses feel the emotional challenge of nursing was more than they anticipated and that their education did not prepare them well to manage this.
A range of recommendations are made, including the need to improve undergraduate curriculum content on managing the emotional challenges of nursing, the need to implement clinical supervision for all nurses but particularly for those under 30, the need to develop and implement activities to address bullying in the workplace, and the need to improve pay progression scales in employment contracts.

Abstract: This descriptive case study was undertaken to provide an account of chemotherapy practice in a nurse-led clinic located within a rural New Zealand area. The researcher, an oncology nurse specialist, worked alongside colleagues for thirteen months to enable practice development. This clinic developed out of a need to have services closer to rural patients in order to address issues of equity, access, care integration and the fiscal and social constraints associated with the cancer burden of care. Capturing the range of data applicable to this case; the ability to conceptualise it as a service within its context was possible using case study research methods. Four nurses involved in the chemotherapy clinic were participants in this study. The findings of this study reveal that what could be perceived as barriers to outcomes and practice can in essence be turned into opportunities to develop new ways of caring for the patient and supporting nursing practice. These nurses view their practice as safe within the clinic despite resource constraints. They work in many ways to support each other and to cushion the patient from the impact of situational and contextual influences. Nursing practice was shown to evolve as a direct result of internal and external influences which were the impetus for nurses taking responsibility for their own competency. This study also explored what it meant to be an experienced nurse but novice in a speciality practice. It challenges previously held assumptions that, to deliver chemotherapy successfully, a nurse needs to be operating from a previously held body of oncology nursing knowledge. Many challenges are faced on a day to day basis in a rural practice environment to just maintain consistent care and promote good patient outcomes. The nurses are well aware of their role in contributing to patients' quality of life and the roles they take to meet the growing needs of the patient as a consumer. This study delves into the multifarious nature of this nurse-led clinic and discusses the processes and relationships that are forged to deliver care.

Abstract: Explores the rationale underpinning the development of education programmes within urban district hospitals throughout the country, and ascertains how these workplaces develop education programmes, given that the majority of nurses in New Zealand have identified that they prefer to participate in workplace-based professional development. Cites a clear requirement to foster learning during a nurse's development post-registration, while considering how prepared nurse educators were to fulfil their roles as lifelong learning facilitators and mentors. Utilises the perspective of nurse educators employed in District Health Boards (DHBs) geographically isolated from universities providing post-registration learning.

Abstract: Addresses the concerns of health professionals working collaboratively in palliative care. Conducts 25 interviews wit 23 participants to arrive at a theory of sharing time to explain the social process of collaboration while individually managing and maintaining their own areas of concern. Explains the concept of health professionals making time in their work days for and with each other to find common ground.

Abstract: Explores the impact of the Care and Support Worker (Pay Equity) Settlement Act (2017) on the quality of life of support workers on the job. Conducts semi-structured interviews with eight support workers, highlighting the following themes: work re-organisation, intensification, collegial working relations, managerial support and communication; pay increments.
