Abstract: This paper reports on a study of the maternity care experiences of women from Goa (India) in Auckland. Multiple research strategies were incorporated into the process to prevent reproduction of deficiency discourses. Interviews were carried out with Goan women who had experiences of migration and motherhood. The findings revealed that as a consequence of motherhood and migration, migrant mothers were able to reclaim and re-invent innovative solutions. Nurses and other health professionals can have a significant role in supporting women and their families undergoing the transition to parenthood in a new country and develop their knowledge and understanding of this dual transition.

Abstract: This report is an evaluation of the academic journey undertaken by a group of newly graduated nurses who were sponsored by a New Zealand district health board to work in a variety of primary health care nursing settings. The impetus for this pilot employment option was the Ministry of Health's focus on primary health care nursing and workforce development for this sector and the Expert Advisory Committee for primary health care nursing's recommendations to district health boards regarding employment of graduate nurses and support for them to engage in post graduate study. Evaluation participants were primarily the graduate nurses who were interviewed at the end of their first year of practice which was following programme completion then again nine to ten months later. Findings include the nurses reflections on what supported them and what acted to impede as barriers to their learning success and practice development. The report concludes with five recommendations that can be used to ensure that the travels of future newly graduated nurses taking this pathway are supported, safe and successful.

Abstract: One proposed method for addressing concerns about a `theory-practice gap' in nurse education and perceived clinical shortcomings in beginning practitioners, is improved collaboration between education and practice. This paper is about a New Zealand nursing initiative to promote optimal learning outcomes for nursing students through supported hospital clinical experiences. It is implemented through a contractual partnership between Lakeland Health Limited in Rotorua, and Waiariki Institute of Technology. An associated “Clinical Nurse Educator Programme”, developed by lecturers at Waiariki's nursing school, prepares hospital nurses to be Clinical Nurse Educators. These “C.N.Es” replace and enhance the clinical role formerly provided by nursing lecturers, and short term contracted nurses. The programme is entering its fourth year with positive evaluations, and has extended into another hospital. Literature suggests that although educators are important, students may consider hospital nurses much more significant for their clinical learning and developing confidence 'in the real world'. These nurses are on hand, and generally have clinical credibility not afforded to academic staff. However, ward nurses, like contracted nurse teachers, have reported not having enough curriculum knowledge, nor teaching skills to optimise student learning. This C.N.E programme addresses these shortcomings through its selection of experienced nurses in current practice, and 50 hours of theoretical and practical course content, to prepare them for the role. This paper provides a clinical and personal perspective of the C.N.E programme, its beginnings, how it works locally, and process for its ongoing development. Not only does this programme provide a bridge between theory and practice for students during their clinical practicum placements, but communication, consultation and collaboration between education, practice and the workplace have also improved. Nurses in both sectors are confident that through the developing partnerships, students and future practice will benefit from the aim to provide students with 'the best of both worlds'.

Abstract: This thesis provides a reflexive critique of the power structures which constrain nursing actions in the practice setting, an abortion clinic, of the registered nurses who participated in this study. The development of abortion services, like other health services for women, has been based on a medical ideology of health which has created many ethical dilemmas for nurses. One of the most complex of these is the extent to which nurses should fulfil the role of client advocate. While the literature on nursing advocacy has been prolific, published research in this area is scant.The theoretical assumptions of critical social science, provide the basis for the methodological approach of action research adapted in this study. In depth, unstructured interviews involving exchange of dialogue amongst the participants with the researcher focused on the participants' experiences of their own nursing practice, with a view to uncoveing and removing restrasints, which had prevented them fulfililng an advocacy role. Diaries were also kept and used as supplementary research tools.The analysis of the data demonstrates the ways in which nurses interpret their own practice world as a system independent of their own actions. It shows how the shared understandings of the participants were 'ideologically frozen' and power relations inherent in the health care system are deep rooted and subtle, coming to be treated as natural by the nurses, and so denying them their own ability to make changes.It is suggested that opportunities for nurses coming together and engaging in such critically reflexive dialogue may provide a basis for future emancipation from traditional power structures. In this way effective and satisfying nursing practice dependent on emancipatory knowledge and a reinterpretation of power structures may result in an advocacy role for nurses

Abstract: Notes an increased demand for research nurses and performs a literature review to define more clearly the role they play coordinating clinical trials and managing associated patient care. Discusses professional issues associated with the role and examines findings against competency requirements for registered nurses as set out by the Nursing Council of New Zealand. Identifies professional issues and perceived barriers as well as potential strategies to strengthen and promote the research nurse role.

Abstract: A survey of health professionals in a medium-sized regional hospital, examining attitudes and perceptions of clinical practice surrounding 'do not resuscitate' orders. Data collected using a questionnaire circulated to medical and nursing professionals currently practising in general medical and surgical areas. Reveals differences in what actually happens in clinical practice compared to what health professionals believe should happen. Using five brief case vignettes, agreement is shown in only two cases as to what resuscitation status should be. Shows that determining resuscitation status in dependent on the individual's values and belief systems
