Employs an audit approach, focussing on the accuracy of routine reporting. Captures data from 2014-2020,including staff members' professional group, gender, category of V&A (e.g. verbal or physical abuse or threat, and physical or sexual assault), date and location of incident, and the individual who committed the violence.

Abstract: Patients with myisthenia gravis (MG) face major pulmary problems as a part of the disease process. In this descriptive study, changes in selected pulmonary functions (respiratory rate, negative inspiratory force, tidal volume and forced total capacity) in 14 patients diagnosed with mild or moderate MG were measured every two hours from 8.00 a.m. to 8.00 p.m. Females comprised 64% of the sample while 36% were males. All subjects received anticholnesterase medication, and some subjects received additional treatment modalities. Most of the subjects were non-smokers or previous smokers, but two subjects continued to smoke. Ninety-three recent of the sample had forced vital capacities less than 60% of their predicted values. Myasthenic forced vital capacities were significantly lower (p=.0000) than those predicted for normal subjects. The inspiratory force for the sample was low sat 8:00 a.m. as well as in females over 55 years of age. There was a wide variation in total volume to normal values derived from random tables and predicted equations ws not significant. Th major implications from this study are the need to assess pulmonary function in the hospitalized myasthenic every two hours, and the need for a program of coughing, deep breathing and sighing after medication administration when the muscles are strongest

Abstract: The researchers repeat the 1996 audit of stroke care in Auckland Hospital to assess changes in stroke management since the introduction of a mobile stroke team. The audit prospectively recorded information for all patients with stroke from 1 June to 30 September 2001. They describe the work of the stroke team physician and the specialist stroke nurse and allied health staff who coordinate the multidisciplinary care of patients. Variables examined include time to arrival and medical assessment, investigations, acute management, inpatient rehabilitation, and stroke outcome. The researchers then describe recent developments in stroke care and the impact of the stroke service on patient management.

Abstract: This study analysed the use of re-infusion drains on 99 consecutive patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty surgery at a large hospital. The primary aim was to ascertain the cost effectiveness of the drains. Secondary aims were to assess safety of the drains, whether or not they reduced the need for allogeneic blood transfusion and whether they decreased the length of stay in hospital. As a control group the records of 99 patients treated without re-infusion were analysed retrospectively. The direct cost of consumables increased for the evaluation period. There was a smaller proportion of allogeneic blood transfusion (27% vs 38%) and a smaller mean number of units transfused (0.92 vs 0.54) in the re-infusion group compared to the control group. Patients benefited directly in that the mean length of stay was also significantly shorter in the re-infusion group. The researchers anticipate more direct cost saving with experience and best practice and conclude that the use of re-infusion drains is a cost effective blood saving method in total knee joint arthroplasty.

A family nursing assessment approach is used. The philosophical underpinnings of this approach are examined, which seeks to empower patients and engage them in their health care. Two public health nurses are interviewed about the new partnership model of nursing.

Abstract: This paper summarises research which addresses the question What might constitute Maori nursing practice? The research design adopted was influenced by kaupapa Maori methodology and used a semi-structured, qualitative, in-depth interview process. It was found that by understanding the current experiences of Maori registered nurses, their reflections on their preparation for practice, and their current practice, it is possible to identify the present and future training and practice needs of Maori nurses. Maori nursing practice can be characterised as having five features: the promotion of cultural affirmation including cultural awareness and identity; the support of, and access to Maori networks; the adoption of Maori models of health; the enabling of visibility and pro-activity as Maori nurses; and, the validation of Maori nurses as effective health professionals. Three recommendations for promoting Maori nursing practice are made in relation to staff in the workplace and in nurse education programmes: all nursing staff need to be alert to: 1. the impact of western scientific models on Maori healthcare; 2. the (often passive) non-acceptance of Maori within mainstream institutions; and iii) the benefits of valuing indigenous nursing programmes.

Abstract: This is a descriptive study of the characteristics of depression in a sample of 121 adolescents attending an outpatient specialist adolescent mental health service in New Zealand. The adolescents were required to complete two self-report measures to assess presence of depressive symptoms, severity of depression, and particular characteristics of the depression. The findings revealed that irritability was the most common characteristic along with other interpersonal and thought processing symptoms. It is important that mental health nurses are able to identify the specific characteristics of adolescent depression that may differ from adult depression in order to manage this patient population effectively.
