Abstract: The author reviews the report 'Fitness for Practice' by the United Kingdom Central Council for Nursing, Midwifery and Health Visiting (UKCC) noting many areas of relevance for New Zealand educators in outlining possible strategies for nursing education. Discussion of some of the recommendations is put in the context of a strategic review of undergraduate nursing education recently commissioned by the Nursing Council of New Zealand. Issues such as recruitment and access to education; retention; clinical assessment and placements; clinical skill acquisition and partnership are valid concerns for educators here also. Internationally, the author suggests, the commonalties in issues of concern lend validity to the concept of the global village and the necessity for a global perspective in health care workforce planning, including educational preparation.

Abstract: The aim of this qualitative study was to evaluate the usefulness of formal reflection in the context of undergraduate nursing education during the teaching of a disability module. Reflection is defined as examination and exploration of an issue of concern to help create or clarify meaning.Twelve reflection assignments written by second-year nursing students were analysed. The analysis indicated that students' reflection focused less on their experience of working with people with disabilities and more on their overall learning experience and coping with clinical practice. A central theme, Coping with Clinical Practice, and four sub-themes were identified. Students acknowledged reflection as beneficial to their learning and linked to their clinical practice.

Uses a descriptive exploratory case-study approach to gather data via three focus groups with a total of eleven participants. Undertakes thematic analysis to identify patterned meaning across the dataset from which two primary themes emerge: support, and recruitment and retention. Identifies five associated sub-themes: peer support, organisational support, liaison nurse support, team support for the graduate registered nurses, and team support for the staff. Reveals the significant contribution made by the Nurse Entry-to-Practice Programme Liaison Nurse as a conflict broker.

Abstract: This article summarises the current level of knowledge regarding dietary effects on serum cholesterol. Information from a literature review was used to design a table that identifies how changes in diet and activity can alter components of a person's lipid profile. Nurses can use the resulting table as a simple tool to give clients targeted education based on their individual cholesterol results. This tool illustrates that not all dietary recommendations to the public are beneficial to serum cholesterol levels and it also explains why popular diets such as the Atkins, Mediterranean, and glycaemic index / load can produce more cardio-protective profiles than the traditional low fat diet.

Abstract: Death education encompasses many complex realities, for both the students and lecturers involved. This quantitative research explored the experiential and didactic preparation of nursing students through a content analysis, of one New Zealand, three year Bachelor of Nursing programme, in relation to death education. The Otago Polytechnic Bachelor of Nursing programme incorporates compulsory and optional courses, with the courses taught as an integrated programme with a progressive, sequential approach. This approach builds on content, deepening understanding from year to year, as well as providing opportunities for experiential learning and broadening of understanding. The literature review discusses three dominant themes of undergraduate death education: education, death, and transition. The data collection tool incorporates eighteen key terms, ten teaching methods and ten assessment methods. The programme and individual course documents, which define course content, teaching and assessment were scanned and analysed. The findings initially showed limited evidence of death education in course documents, however deeper analysis of the documents showed further evidence over the three year programme. The existence of death education is implied rather than overt throughout many course documents, through the use of broad practice statements. Content analysis is one way of shedding light on programme content in relation to death education. Limitations of the content analysis approach mean measuring experiential and didactic learning is not fully achievable from documentation analysis only. Further development of Bachelor of Nursing death education is an ongoing challenge, with current programmes very full and possibly lacking the capacity to increase content. Bachelor of Nursing programmes are discussed, highlighting the need for student focused learning with emphasis on acquiring and processing information, rather than mastery of content.

Abstract: This thesis uses an autoethnographic method to describe the author's personal journey and the influences on teaching the Treaty of Waitangi in the School of Nursing at Otago Polytechnic, from 1985 to 2005. The author starts this exploration as a beginning teaching practitioner in 1985, and continues on with her attendance at the original workshop for trainers by Project Waitangi in 1990. She discusses the influences of her studies towards a Bachelor of Arts at Otago University, through the development of School Charters which influenced her children's schooling and through the process of teaching and facilitating the workshops for Treaty education, until her position in the School of Nursing changed in 2005. She discusses through reflection, the personal influences, the socialisation process of teaching the history of Aotearoa New Zealand to students, the influences of nursing education on Treaty education, the influences of Irihapeti Ramsden's relationship to her journey and also her lecturers at university. She also traces her journey of beginning teaching practice. The author identifies this work as providing a starting place for potential research into the experiences and reflections of nurse educators over this period of time, and across other educational institutes and disciplines. The experiences of students from this teaching would also add to the profession's and the country's knowledge about the relationship of the Treaty of Waitangi to both education and health.

Abstract: One proposed method for addressing concerns about a `theory-practice gap' in nurse education and perceived clinical shortcomings in beginning practitioners, is improved collaboration between education and practice. This paper is about a New Zealand nursing initiative to promote optimal learning outcomes for nursing students through supported hospital clinical experiences. It is implemented through a contractual partnership between Lakeland Health Limited in Rotorua, and Waiariki Institute of Technology. An associated “Clinical Nurse Educator Programme”, developed by lecturers at Waiariki's nursing school, prepares hospital nurses to be Clinical Nurse Educators. These “C.N.Es” replace and enhance the clinical role formerly provided by nursing lecturers, and short term contracted nurses. The programme is entering its fourth year with positive evaluations, and has extended into another hospital. Literature suggests that although educators are important, students may consider hospital nurses much more significant for their clinical learning and developing confidence 'in the real world'. These nurses are on hand, and generally have clinical credibility not afforded to academic staff. However, ward nurses, like contracted nurse teachers, have reported not having enough curriculum knowledge, nor teaching skills to optimise student learning. This C.N.E programme addresses these shortcomings through its selection of experienced nurses in current practice, and 50 hours of theoretical and practical course content, to prepare them for the role. This paper provides a clinical and personal perspective of the C.N.E programme, its beginnings, how it works locally, and process for its ongoing development. Not only does this programme provide a bridge between theory and practice for students during their clinical practicum placements, but communication, consultation and collaboration between education, practice and the workplace have also improved. Nurses in both sectors are confident that through the developing partnerships, students and future practice will benefit from the aim to provide students with 'the best of both worlds'.

Abstract: In this paper, the critique of the mental health component of comprehensive nursing education and the questions that it raises are explored from historical, structural and ideological perspectives. In order to locate the past and highlight its significance to where psychiatric/mental health nurses find themselves today some of the history of the asylum system and the development of psychiatric nursing in New Zealand within these structures are presented. Ideological changes to the way mental health was thought about, and responded to, have had considerable impact on where psychiatric nurses practiced, how they practised and what they were named. This created the need for a different kind of nurse and has led to changes in the education of nurses. The structural influences on the training and education of nurses are identified through relevant reports and their recommendations and significance in relation to psychiatric/mental health nursing are examined. Issues deriving from the critique of undergraduate psychiatric/mental health nursing education highlight the urgent nature of the crisis and draw out the multiple and competing discourses that inform the education of nurses. In acknowledging that the crisis can be viewed from multiple perspectives the need for responses from multiple levels involving the Nursing Council of New Zealand, the Ministry of Health, the Mental Health Commission and nurses in education and practice are recommended.

Abstract: The authors note that the literature identifies that the transition from tertiary based training to the realities of industry expectations can be a stressful period for graduates. Various District Health Boards offer postgraduate papers within their graduate nursing programmes, resulting in graduates being expected to perform the role of a beginning practitioner as well as embark on postgraduate education during this first year. As yet, the authors note, there is little evidence available to substantiate the efficacy and impact of such papers. The purpose of this study was to explore graduate nurse's experience of postgraduate education within the Graduate Nurse Programme. The report contains the results of a survey of nurses within the Programme. This report details the results of that survey and make recommendations for consideration.
