Abstract: This study explores the archetypal dimension of nursing reality in nurses' stories through a window of nurse-nurse relations. The thesis argues the existence of the unconscious psyche and its importance for nursing, and the study unfolds a methodology that attends to unconscious processes and is congruent with analytical psychology and its practice. It is a two strand inquiry informed by general hermeneutics and Jungian thought engaging a synthetic interpretive methodology using interweaving intellectual and imaginistic processes. In the first strand of the inquiry five female registered nurses share their individual stories which become the text for a nursing narrative that reveals the what-is of nursing reality in essences of Story and Kinship, and a Lifeworld undermined by high levels of Stress. In the second strand of the inquiry the researcher engages imaginistic process to access the archetypal dimension of the nursing narrative, resulting in a sub text from which archetypal images emerge to reveal the more-than of nursing reality. The emergent images are amplified to reveal their symbolic meanings, and their connection to the nursing narrative is explored. An interpretation that is consistent with analytical psychology is offered in a synthesis of the material arising from the nurses' stories and the imaginistic process. The author notes that this synthetic understanding is teleological in nature and directs attention to the need for nursing to grow a differentiated consciousness that is honouring of the feminine principle in the psyche in contradistinction from an overweaning masculine patriarchal consciousness that compromises the nursing endeavour.

Abstract: The author notes that responses to questions from dying people and their families are as individual as each nurse, patient, family member, or situation. This is well recognised and an unspoken truth in palliative care practice. This paper explores the subjective nature of knowledge in palliative care generated through capturing moments of practice and subsequent reflections. This demonstrates how the author uses her model of care to open a space that enables the person and their family to find meaning from their experience and articulate what they need at the time. The author identifies her interest in the paradoxical reality of knowing and not knowing and describes how that paradox contributes to her role in supporting individuals' needs within their realities.

Abstract: The aim of this study was to describe the nature and size of long-term residential care homes in New Zealand; funding of facilities; and the ethnic and gender composition of residents and residential care workers nationwide. A postal, fax, and email survey of all long-term residential care homes in New Zealand was undertaken, with completed surveys received from an eligible 845 facilities (response rate: 55%). The majority of these (54%) facilities housed less than 30 residents. Of the 438 (94%) facilities completing the questions about residents' ethnicity, 432 (99%) housed residents from New Zealand European (Pakeha) descent, 156 (33%) housed at least 1 Maori resident, 71 (15%) at least 1 Pacific (Islands) resident, and 61 (13%) housed at least 1 Asian resident. Facilities employed a range of ethnically diverse staff, with 66% reporting Maori staff. Less than half of all facilities employed Pacific staff (43%) and Asian staff (33%). Registered nursing staff were mainly between 46 and 60 years (47%), and healthcare assistant staff were mostly between 25 and 45 years old (52%). Wide regional variation in the ethnic make up of staff was reported. About half of all staff were reported to have moved within the previous 2 years. The authors conclude that the age and turnover of the residential care workforce suggests the industry continues to be under threat from staffing shortages. While few ethnic minority residents live in long-term care facilities, staff come from diverse backgrounds, especially in certain regions.

Abstract: This article reports on the New Zealand part of an international study, using agreed study design and instruments, to determine the direct and indirect costs of nursing turnover. These costs also include the systemic costs, estimated by determining the impacts of turnover on patient and nurse outcomes. It presents the findings from the pilot study conducted in six countries to test the availability of costs and suitability of the instrument. Reports the results from a survey of directors of nursing in 20 of the 21 district health boards on turnover and workplace practices.

Abstract: The researchers evaluate two case-management models of respite relief care at Waitemata District Health Board. The evaluation consisted of semi-structured interviews and postal surveys for clients utilising respite care and staff members involved in both the North/West and Rodney models of respite care in Auckland. Across the two regions, a total of 2 older people and their informal caregivers, 2 respite coordinators, and the Needs Assessment Service Coordination (NASC) Manager were interviewed. In addition, postal surveys were received from 21 older people, 36 informal caregivers, 11 NASC workers, and 3 allied health professionals. Findings revealed there was generally high satisfaction with both the respite models. Caregivers believed the respite service did give them a break, although it was insufficient. Caregivers reported concerns regarding how respite facilities could improve and the older person's deterioration post respite. Staff identified improvements for each of the models.

Abstract: This paper identifies the issue of sexual misconduct by nurses in New Zealand. There is evidence that some nurses have been involved in sexual misconduct, resulting in disciplinary proceedings against them. Despite this, there is an absence of guidelines and discussion for New Zealand nurses to prevent such occurrences. This article identifies difficulties in naming and defining sexual misconduct, and discusses sexual misconduct as an abuse of power by nurses. New Zealand and international literature about sexual misconduct by nurses and other health professionals is described, as are guidelines designed to prevent sexual misconduct. Finally, the authors make recommendations for actions needed to facilitate New Zealand nurses in identifying and avoiding sexual misconduct in practice.

Abstract: The researchers conducted a study to compare self-reported changes in both frequency and quality of performance of nursing behaviours in a cohort of recently graduated nurses undertaking a one year entry to practice programme. Thirty-three nurses were surveyed, seven weeks after beginning the programme and again seven months later, using a modified version of Schwirian's (1978) Six-Dimension Scale of Nursing Performance (6-DSNP). Over the study period participants reported significant increases in frequency of performance for the domains of leadership, critical care, teaching/collaboration, and planning/evaluation. Significant increases in the quality of nurse behaviours in the domains of critical care, planning/evaluation and interpersonal relations/communication were also reported. The modified Schwirian 6-DSNP was found to be a useful instrument for measuring nurses' self reporting of performance during periods of transition.
