Abstract: Promotes the use of the SOAP(IE) framework for nursing documentation. Conducts action research to identify areas within cycles of planning, implementation, evaluation and reflection in need of improvement. Undertakes three cycles of action research using audits, surveys and a focus group interview with RNs in two DHB medical wards. Increases the uptake of SOAP through education sessions and tools, and nurse champions.

Abstract: Utilises a critical realist case study framework to explore how rehabilitation nurses documented their contribution for clients with traumatic brain injury (TBI), and the influences on that documentation. Administers a questionnaire, undertakes an audit and interviews the nurses about their contribution. Makes six recommendations in relation to organisational level decision-making and the practice of individual nurses.

Seeks to discover whether there is evidence of other factors influencing the provision of, or access to, clinical supervision by general nurses, which influences attitudes and perceptions.

Abstract: Explores emergency nurses? perspectives and practices about the quality, importance and value of emergency nursing documentation in relation to their personal beliefs, past experiences and preferred systems of documentation; the practical and contextual factors that influence documentation practices within an emergency department (ED); their interests in documentation tools or systems; and their interests in relation to further development of documentation practices and systems. Conducts a qualitative descriptive study in which ten emergency nurses from one ED in New Zealand were interviewed using interactive interview methods, and asked to complete a Likert scale to identify the relevance of internationally- recognised general influences on documentation to their own practices in the context of an ED. Includes recommended routes to development through partnership, participation and process engagement, and strategies including document development, knowledge advancement and support.

Abstract: Investigates nurses' catheter management practices, by means of an audit, as documented in a newly-introduced self-administered indwelling catheter-management checklist incorporating four components of catheter care in a catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) prevention bundle. Identifies these components of the bundle of care as: minimisation of inappropriate catheter use, aseptic insertion of catheters, adherence to catheter maintenance guidelines, and ongoing review and evaluation of catheter necessity. Shows that implementation of care components decreases bacteriuria rates and CAUTI when used together in standardised clinical checklists and performed collectively by nurses. Employs a quantitative research design as part of a mixed-methods study conducted at two surgical wards in a public hospital in Auckland where 50 nurses completed 175 checklists.
