Abstract: This article describes the findings of a research study on the experience of teaching cultural safety. As a teacher of cultural safety, the first author was interested in exploring the experience of teaching the topic with other cultural safety teachers. A qualitative approach situated in a critical theory paradigm was used for the study. The study was informed by the ideas of Foucault and feminist theory. Fourteen women between ages 20 and 60 were interviewed about their experience of teaching cultural safety. Five women were Maori and 9 were Pakeha. Following data analysis, three major themes were identified: that the Treaty of Waitangi provides for an examination of power in cultural safety education; that the broad concept of difference influences the experience of teaching cultural safety; and that the experience of teaching cultural safety has personal, professional, and political dimensions. These dimensions were experienced differently by Maori and Pakeha teachers.

Abstract: In this article, the author integrates literature pertaining to the implementation of kawa whakaruruhau, or cultural safety, with the findings of a hermeneutic project that described the experience of nursing people from cultures other than one's own. It is argued that the Gadamerian notions of “horizon,” “prejudice,” and “play” can be used to facilitate understanding of the tensions and contradictions inherent in cross-cultural practice. Strategies are recommended that enable students to explore the prejudices, paradoxes, and possibilities experienced personally and professionally.

Abstract: This article outlines some of the health experiences and concerns of people with physical and/or mental disabilities. These experiences and concerns are explored within the context of the practice of cultural safety. In 1996, the Nursing Council of New Zealand adopted its definition of cultural safety and defines 'culture', in the context of 'cultural safety', as involving all people who are not part of the culture of nursing. Each person with a disability is unique, and they may also be part of a larger disability culture, which has its own shared experiences, values, beliefs and lifestyles. People with disabilities are also a minority within the population. Therefore, any power they might have within their own culture is minimal, compared to the advantages enjoyed by the rest of the population.

Abstract: In this introduction to a special issue on nursing with indigenous peoples, the authors affirm the need for continued application of tools and strategies for thinking critically about issues of culture, history and race. Without these things, evidence of discriminatory policies and practices in the health system remain hidden to many health professionals. Attention to socio-political structures is as essential to promoting health and preventing illness as are nurses' activities with the individual clients. To develop critical consciousness in nursing requires educational strategies and frameworks that focus on the responsibilities and implications of practicing nursing in a postcolonial context where race and power continue to create patterns of inclusion and exclusion in health care settings. The authors suggest that many contemporary nursing programmes fail to provide such strategies and frameworks, and argue that nursing must view critical analyses of these issues as central aspects of nursing education, research, theory and practice. They go on to engage with the notion of cultural safety as a means of fostering a critical political and social consciousness in nursing to create an opportunity for social transformation.

Abstract: This study explores the phenomenon of a personal exploratory field visit to HIV programmes in Malawi and how that informs the author's future plans to work cross-culturally with HIV. He uses hermeneutic phenomenology with the guidance of Heidegger and Gadamer, and draw on Ackermann, Hill, Maluleke, Moltmann, and Thielicke for theological direction. This study analyses how personal formation takes place and how the meaning of that experience can inform future cross-cultural interaction. The data of this study is drawn from a range of people interviewing 'me'. This includes a pre and post interview in relation to the author's three week exploratory visit to Malawi, and recorded daily reflections during the visit. Upon return he was interviewed about the experience by ten people from the following areas: nursing, counselling, development, theology, business, medicine, clergy, an Expatriate Malawian, and a women working from a Maori paradigm. These interviews focused on the author's experience with questions framed from the interviewer's specialty area. The transcripts become further data for this study. The findings of this thesis suggest that people wishing to work cross-culturally need to understand their motivation for their work, and understand who they are before entering a foreign land. This transformative journey also needs to continue as part of the process of working with people because we can only be effective with change if we are listening and hearing the other's perspective. It is in being open to this difference between persons that we continue to find ourselves. While perhaps we have a tendency to want to make everybody like us, we can only grow into our full potential in relationship with truly different others. Tensions experienced demonstrate that there is a complex need to understand how the context controls how HIV is perceived. This requires uncovering some of the deeper issues of HIV and culture, and knowing how to conceptualise these in both positive and informative ways. This thesis asks four key questions for the global-co-worker to work through before embarking on cross-cultural mission: 1. How do you know you should go?; 2. How are you going to make a difference?; 3. Who are you going to be?; and 4. What will sustain your involvement? The author's own experience has drawn me into a deeper awareness of the need for a vital connectedness of faith, hope and love underpinning the everydayness of such an experience.

Abstract: This research considers the issues raised by the transfer from New Zealand to India of a degree for registered nurses. In the context of globalisation and the continuing migration of nurses, many countries are actively facilitating the transfer of educational programmes from other countries into their own. This transfer brings with it particular challenges for educators establishing and implementing programmes in a new environment and culture. Based on the experience and reflections of one educator involved in such a transfer, this research considers pedagogical issues such as addressing cultural safety in course content and delivery, expectations of teaching and learning styles, as well as the ethical issues raised by transferring a programme to another country in order to facilitate nurses' migration from it.

Abstract: This article defines dementia, and explores recent trends in relation to why it is such a misunderstood condition in the health care setting. Within a theoretical framework of literature development, nurse client relationships, and quality of care and attitudes are analysed. Gaps, inconsistencies and consistencies are outlined, with the implications for nursing practice and education explored.

Abstract: This thesis traces the journey of the author's inquiry into family members' experience of the relinquishment of the personhood of a loved one with a dementia; a journey in which she reports that her own prior understandings were significantly challenged. The study was prompted by her experience of working in the area of dementia care and hearing, in the course of the working day, comments such as 'there's nobody there' made in relation to someone suffering from severe dementia. Such comments appear to imply that the person of the dementia sufferer in some way is no longer present. They are comments which relate to the very nature of personhood. The study takes impetus from the fact that the ways in which nurses view the personhood of dementia sufferers has significant consequences for the ways in which they respond to dementia sufferers and their families. This thesis, which retells the stories of four family members who each have a loved one with a dementia illness, reveals that rather than there being a unified concept of personhood in dementia, and in spite of the fact that particular understandings of dementia and personhood dominate our cultural conversations, in their day to day lives these four family members managed and made sense of their experience through particular and different ways of looking at the impact dementia has on the personhood of dementia sufferers. Not all did, in fact, relinquish the personhood of their family member. In their lived lives, the four research participants had recourse, each in different ways, to multiple discourses of personhood. For some, in addition to loss, there was also unexpected gain. This finding necessitated and shaped further inquiry into discourse and the role of discourse in shaping, constraining and opening up possibilities for meaning, and into the two substantive areas of dementia and personhood. Nurses work closely alongside the family of dementia sufferers who are daily faced with the challenge of managing and making meaning of that situation. It is critically important that they are able to recognise, validate and support the variety of needs that family members have. Nurses, whose education is traditionally based on a biomedical framework, are nevertheless often required to mediate between different understandings. Not only do they need currency of knowledge in the rapidly changing biomedical field of dementia, but they need also an understanding of the role and the power of discursive constructions of both dementia and personhood. Such understanding will provide insight into alternate ways of understanding these concepts. However, although such understanding is critical for nurses working in this area, the author suggests that nursing literature has not brought these discussions to the fore.
