"Social realities' are defined as the actual conditions, pressures, disabilities and abilities, limitations and resources that exist in the lifespan of people and form the environment within which Nursing practices. A Curriculum relevancy process ( CRP) has been developed for use as the main analytical tool of the study. CRP has been designated as an information seeking, problem solving and evaluative process. It consists of three phases with a major emphasis on the first phase, information seeking. Information has been gathered about contemporary social realities ( the year of 1979) and related Socio- health disorders. Information has been gathered and analysed from official ad voluntary sources and the findings related to curricular choices for Nursing education

  Abstract An overview of the model of nursing practice and nurse roles derived through a programme of nursing research in the context of the changing New Zealand health system. The emphasis is on the complementary nature of the practice of family nurses taking a generic integrative service delivery hub role and the practice of other nurses advancing in specialist roles. Nursing care is presented as a professional, collective practice of registered nurses spread across all health service sectors and employment settings. Nurse roles are differentiated according to the interplay of two factors influencing the extent of practice autonomy the nurses assume (educationally supported) in responding to health need. A diagram depicts the interrelationship of competency and scope for the inclusive three different career trajectories of nurses advancing in practice. NOTE: This paper was published with an error in the title of the article (stated correctly on the journal contents page). An apology from the journal editor with an explanation of the importance of the use of the term ?advancing? and not ?advanced? was published in the subsequent issue (Nursing Praxis in NZ,14(1)).

  Abstract The aim of this paper is to increase neuroscience nurses' awareness of how the head is perceived as sacred by some cultures. This article will outline a definition of culture, discussion around the sanctity of the head for some cultures, the cultural significance of common neuroscience interventions, the use of traditional healing methods, and prayer. Examples will be provided of how nursing interactions and interventions affect some cultures, looking primarily at a Maori and Pacific Island perspective. The focus of this paper is within a New Zealand paediatric setting.

  Abstract This study compared the perceptions that registered psychiatric nurses have of their roles with their actual practice. Following the closure of large scale psychiatric institutions in New Zealand, there was was an increased demand for limited beds in acute inpatient facilities for acutely mentally ill patients. This change in location and downsizing of acute inpatient beds challenged traditional roles of mental health nursing, resulting in confusion over what roles mental health nurses should now perform in the new context of care. This qualitative descriptive exploratory study observed nursing practice on three selected wards and used focus group interviews to establish from registered nurses what they perceived their roles to be. A key finding of this study was that many of the nursing roles related to delivering care from a crisis management perspective, which covers aspects such as assessment, stabilisation of symptoms and discharge planning. Participants also believed that the therapeutic relationship was a fundamental role in inpatient care. Nurses used any opportunity to make it a reality such as kitchen organisation, medications, or dealing with a challenging patient. This study highlighted the complexity of the roles that nurses performed and went some way to give voice to what at times seems an invisible practice.

  Abstract Outpatient nurses are often seen as nurses who are less important or skilled and can no longer physically cope with working in busy wards. This report is aimed to challenge this presumption and show that there are many educated and highly skilled nurses working in these departments. The diversity of the role of the nurse within the continued advancement of nursing practice in the outpatient department is evidence to disprove the perceptions other nurses have of the outpatient nurse. The purpose of this report was to discuss the changing role of the outpatient nurse from 'handmaiden' to 'autonomous practitioner', and secondly, to discuss nurse-led services and what experience and/or skills these nurses are expected to have to fulfill these roles. Literature was gathered to inform this report from the academic circles, policy from the Ministry of Health, the District Health Board website, and in relation to the author's own role with the outpatient department.

  Abstract This article reports on a descriptive study undertaken within a school of nursing where the author was formerly employed. The study explored the role of the lecturer within the preceptorship model of clinical teaching. It uses an exploratory/descriptive, qualitative approach to interviewing 12 lecturers. The findings demonstrate the educational orientation of the lecturer role and also highlight the tension that continues to exist between the world of education and the world of practice.

This study examined the role of an advanced nurse practitioner in the identification, diagnosis and management of patients referred to an IBS nurse led clinic with symptoms of IBS as their primary problem. Items of interest were identification of the causes of symptoms, the effects of symptoms on quality of life (QOL), coping strategies of the patient, and patient satisfaction with care. These were measured by prospective data on two questionnaires given several months apart. In addition, some basic retrospective data were collected from a database of information on prior patients, to determine that the study subjects were representative of the IBS practice.

  Abstract The purpose of this study was to determine if there was commonality amongst teachers, in perceptions of the role of student self-assessment in the nursing programme. Four nurse educators, who were teaching and supervising students undertaking self-assessment in clinical practice, participated in a semi-structured interview. Three focus questions guided the interviews and addressed the individual teachers perception of self-assessment, what the teacher considered the benefits of self-assessment to be, and how the teacher used student's self-assessment's in their role as clinical supervisor. The taped interviews were transcribed, and coded and general themes identified. The findings revealed a high degree of consensus amongst the teachers in regard to the co-operative nature of self-assessment, and the teacher's role as a facilitator. The need for students to develop skills of analysis and reflection on their performance as well as the need to furnish students with clear guidelines on what to self-assess, were highlighted

  Abstract The development of generic statutory roles in mental health care has been the subject of discussion by New Zealand nurses for the past decade. One such role is that of second health professional in judicial reviews of civil commitment. Issues identified by New Zealand nurses have also been raised in England, where it seems that nurses are likely to assume the role of Approved Mental Health Worker under English mental health law. A survey of mental health nurses found that few had received any preparation for the role of second health professional and 45% did not feel adequately prepared for the role. Some of these issues are reflected in a New Zealand inquiry which resulted in the Ministry of Health developing a written report form for second health professionals. However, the form has the potential to reduce the mental health nursing role to a narrow legal role. Statutory roles such as that of second health professional challenge mental health nurses to critically reflect on the conceptual and ethical basis of their practice. While traditional concepts such as therapeutic relationships and advocacy need to be reviewed in light of these changes, nurses need to be vigilant in articulating the moral and clinical basis of their roles. The development of guidelines for the second health professional role is suggested as a way of supporting clinical practice in this area.
