Abstract |
Argues that nurses undertaking doctoral research have a responsibility to ensure their research engages with international nursing research and is relevant post-doctorally. Distinguishes between the purpose of PhDs and Professional Doctorates. Finds that nursing doctoral graduates are impeded from assuming leading roles in funded research. Attempts to find ways to address this challenge, suggesting that remote attendance at conferences and Internet communication with nurse researchers overseas encourages an international perspective on nursing topics. Backgrounds the establishment of an international nursing research community between Oxford Brookes University in the UK and Victoria University of Wellington in NZ. |

Asserts that nursing needs to think critically about High-fidelity simulation (HFS) use, and its dominance, in the educational preparation of nurses. Draws on the tenets of postmodernism and Foucauldian discourse analysis methodology to question the discourses and discursive practices that influence the use of HFS as an approach to intentional and unintentional teaching and learning in pre-registration nursing education in NZ. Explores how this shapes nursing students' subjectivity and, ultimately, nursing practice. |

Measures the extent to which health-care students began their training with compassionate attributes. Defines compassion as an awareness of others and a desire to help, using a non-judgmental approach. Highlights the significance of compassion in health care. Provides a self-administered 'compassion to others' psychometric scale to measure compassionate attributes to 146 students enrolled in the first semester of nursing, midwifery and social work at the Waikato Institute of Technology (Wintec). Analyses data using the SPSS and ANOVA for descriptive statistics and predictive information. |

Considers whether an educational intervention in which mental illness and addiction sufferers share their personal experience with nursing students results in the development of empathy and compassion among nursing students. Incorporates five workshops into the bachelor of nursing curriculum, in which students listen to the stories told by mental health/addiction patients. Gathers accounts from students of their reactions afterwards. |

Undertakes three-part qualitative, interview-based research to investigate how workplace cyberbullying manifests in nursing. Interviews eight nurses who had experienced bullying. Uncovers the risk of nurses experiencing cyberbullying from external sources such as students, patients, and patient relatives. Posits a multi-factor socio-ecological model as a framework to guide future research. |

Identifies changes that link nurses noticed in their practice areas as a result of participating in a pressure-injury prevention programme. Uses three nurse focus groups to collect data about changes in pressure-injury prevention within their practice areas following implementation of a link-nurse programme. Talks to 22 nurses about increasing awareness of pressure injury prevention, use of assessment tools and documentation, and acquisition of injury prevention equipment. |

Abstract |
Argues that undergraduate nurse education contributes to the problem of too few nurses choosing to work in aged care, by constructing working in aged care as a lower-status or less valuable area of work than other health-care areas. Examines the issue using Foucauldian discourse analysis to explore the dominant discourses being deployed in relation to clinical experience in aged care. Collects data through semi-structured interviews with 10 senior academic staff members from NZ tertiary institutions. Analyses interview data to reveal how a 'nurse education discourse' and a 'work-ready discourse' were shaping perceptions of aged care as a clinical experience in a variety of ways. Suggests that how and why aged care is utilised as a space to learn a range of nursing skills has the unintended effect of devaluing and discouraging employment in aged care settings. |

Describes the lived experience of health professionals ageing at work, and of the managers interacting with them. Demonstrates that the ability of older practitioners to adapt to meet the ongoing physical demands of practice and their shifting workplace environment determines whether they will be valued at work and remain in their roles. |

Aims to understand how RN prescribers interact with other members of the health care team and to identify the social processes at play. Employs Bourdieu's 'Theory of Practice' to explore health care teams as competitive social spaces where health professionals vie to establish social position and authority. Recruits three health care teams representing primary health and specialty practice for interviews and observation. Conducts a qualitative, instrumental, multi-case study informed by the Chronic Illness Trajectory Framework. Analyses data from six linked cases (patient, family and clinicians) in four ICUs over a two-year period. Argues that identifying the sub-phases of a prolonged critical illness trajectory allows targeted interventions for each sub-phase. |
