Abstract: Seeks to develop a better understanding of the undergraduate nursing students' experience of their clinical placement in mental health, and to identify the influences on student learning in an acute adult mental health service. Enrols a cohort of 13 nursing students to analyse their lived experiences through their written reflections on practice, which offered important insights into the students' experience of their first mental health clinical placement. Identifies six themes by means of thematic analysis.

Abstract: Explores the social and cognitive non-technical skills (NTS) required of nurses practising in general surgical wards, a taxonomy of NTS for general surgical nurses, and identifies the differences in levels of performance of the NTS between experienced and less experienced nurses, by means of applied cognitive task analysis (ACTA). Highlights the association between poor performance of NTS with adverse patient events. Conducts the study in four surgical wards in a metropolitan hospital, using observation and semi-structured interviews with RNs.

Abstract: Explores the current perceptions of nurses working in child health with regard to their potential role in child protection. Conducts a mixed-method study using sequential explanatory design involving 134 survey results and six complementary interviews. Aims to provide insight into current nursing practices of those working in child health settings, and identifies barriers to nurses engaging with social services.

Abstract: Seeks to give voice to migrant nurses, using case-study methodology to highlight their experience of the competence assessment process. Distributes a questionnaire to a group of 22 newly-arrived IQNs, and conducts interviews with 10 IQNs who had been working in NZ for several years. Uncovers the motivations among the first group and reflections on the Competence Assessment Programme (CAP) among the second. Makes recommendations for CAP training based on the results of the study.

Abstract: Explores and identifies factors associated with nurse concern when patient deterioration is recognised in the absence of an emergency activation score such as early warning scoring (EWS) or the physiologically-unstable patient (PUP) tool. Describes the two phases of the multi-site and mixed-methods study: retrospective chart review of 19,326 referrals for emergency assistance; and seven focus group discussions with 29 nurses about what they do when concerned about patient deterioration in the absence of an EWS. Highlights the role of nurse expertise, knowledge and skill in identifying patient deterioration prior to the activation score on an EWS.

Abstract: Presents a qualitative exploration of factors that influence eight newly-graduated nurses as they endeavour to practice ethical mental health nursing. Gathers data from in-depth interviews with the participants, analysed using a thematic analysis method. Considers aspects of the social and political context within which the participants are situated.

Abstract: Argues that nurses undertaking doctoral research have a responsibility to ensure their research engages with international nursing research and is relevant post-doctorally. Distinguishes between the purpose of PhDs and Professional Doctorates. Finds that nursing doctoral graduates are impeded from assuming leading roles in funded research. Attempts to find ways to address this challenge, suggesting that remote attendance at conferences and Internet communication with nurse researchers overseas encourages an international perspective on nursing topics.
