Abstract |
The purpose of this essay is to examine why postgraduate education has become so important, to examine some of the issues around mandatory continuing education and the practical effect of this on a nursing career. Four strategies from the Ministry of Health, designed to facilitate changing nurse education, are discussed. The importance of Professional Development Recognition programmes is discussed along with the need for strong nursing leadership. |

Explores the experiences of participants in a health education programme designed specifically for Maori males, called Tane Takitu Ake, delivered by community health workers and a nurse. Employs a qualitative descriptive methodology with thematic analysis of data from a focus group cohort of Maori males aged 38 to 55 years referred to the programme via social and/or health services. Gathers data from during a 10-week kaupapa Maori programme. |

The author examines some of the issues affecting preceptorship in relation to a graduate diploma programme of psychiatric mental health nursing. Previous research by the author lead to recommendations on clarifying the roles and responsibilities of those involved in the programme, and improving preceptor selection, training, support and evaluation. By providing such clarity and support, the preceptor role in the clinical setting is given the best chance to succeed. |

This paper explores the relationships within teaching, learning and practice development in critical care nursing and questions the popular assumption that 'post graduate (Master's level) education fits all'. The need for critical care nurses to apply advanced knowledge and technical skills to complex and dynamic practice situations necessitates the development of critical thinking and a problem-solving approach to clinical practice that can be fostered through education and experience. Discussion focuses on the successful development and implementation of graduate level education for critical care nurses in the South Island of New Zealand and how this development is challenging existing approaches to the provision and evaluation of formal critical care education in New Zealand. |

The researchers present a survey of a sample population of 32 advanced practice nurses (APN) in the US about their experiences of acquiring and implementing prescriptive authority. The issues relevant to nurse practitioners in New Zealand are discussed, around acquiring knowledge and education, relationships with other professionals, establishing the role, and retaining the nursing role. The intent and scope of APN prescribing in the US is also discussed. |

Uses a qualitative, descriptive approach as the methodology to interview a voluntary purposeful sample of nursing students enrolled across the BN programme. Aministers focus group interviews with 10 nursing students from semester two through to final semester, year three. |

The educational framework used to teach pharmacology to nurses by one university in New Zealand is presented, along with early findings on the effectiveness of this approach. Nurse prescribing is relatively new in New Zealand and is related to the expanding roles and opportunities for nurses in health care. Opposition to nurse prescribing in New Zealand has been marked and often this has been linked to concerns over patient safety with the implication that nurses could not be adequately prepared for safe prescribing. |

Abstract |
This paper offers an insight into the development of the advanced role of rural nursing practice in New Zealand. The concept of advanced nursing practice is discussed within the context of the interdisciplinary healthcare team. It is argued that as nurses take on advanced practice, it is essential they receive appropriate clinical and theoretical skills to ensure they are in a position to provide competent and clinically safe, effective health care in an ethical, efficient manner. A description of a survey, undertaken by the author, studying rural nurses' skills provides the recommendation for the development of an appropriate postgraduate course at Masters level, designed specifically for primary rural nurses for the advanced role. |

This article presents an integrated approach to pharmacology education for nurses aligned with constructivist learning theory, as taught at the School of Nursing, University of Auckland. The weaving of pharmacology through the three-year undergraduate curriculum is described, showing the development of a pharmacology curricula thread. The significance of supporting curricula content in areas such as communication skills, law and ethics, as well as sound biological science and physiology knowledge are highlighted. |
