Abstract |
Describes the uptake of postgraduate education, the intent to travel and employment characteristics of NZ registered nurses in their fourth year of practice following registration. Aims to support retention strategies and expand extended career pathways by acknowledging the preferences and pathways selected by early career registered nurses. Analyses responses from 138 registered nurses using data from the longitudinal Graduate e-cohort Study for nurses graduating in the years 2008-2011. Reports summary statistics in percentages/counts along with tests of proportions using the Pearson's chi square test. |

Abstract |
Aims to generate a descriptive account of the experiences of district nurses working with people with spinal cord injury (SCI). Conducts a qualitative descriptive study using semi-structured interviews with three district nurses about their role. Reveals three themes related to the district nurses' role: tasks; complexity; barriers/enablers affecting performance. Suggests that the role of district health nurses meeting the needs of people with SCI requires review. |

Abstract |
This paper reports the findings of a preliminary survey of two district health boards, which shows that high workloads and lack of relief staffing appear as the greatest hurdles to mental health nurses participating in practice-based nursing research. A further constraint on their participation is lack of research expertise and experience. Consultative discussions with senior mental health nurses support these conclusions. In this paper, mentoring and flexible research designs are promoted as possible ways of overcoming these barriers. |

Abstract |
Presents the results of a survey of non-prescribing diabetes nurse specialists' views of prescribing in the wake of a trial and staged implementation of diabetes nurse specialist prescribing. Conducts on online survey of members of the diabetes nurse specialist section of NZNO. Analyses the results descriptively, finding a statistically significant relationship between being a specialist and the intention to prescribe. Avers that for diabetes nurse specialist prescribing to continue, the resources for supervision must be taken into account in workforce planning. |

Abstract |
The authors examine gender based disparities for academics with respect to remuneration, academic grading and Perfomance Based Research Fund (PBRF) scores, whereby women do less well than men in each of these areas. In this article individualised explanations for the failure of women to progress are set in the context of a critical exploration of the PBRF evaluation methodology. It is argued that both academia and the PBRF research assessment exercise embody a form of academic masculinity that systematically disadvantages women in general and nursing in particular. |

Abstract |
At Whitireira Community Polytechnic the curriculum philosophy for the Bachelor of Nursing Degree Programme is based on the Treaty of Waitangi, which provides a framework to articulate the concepts of Partnership, Governorship, Advocacy and Empowerment. This paper will describes a research study that aimed to explore the phenomenon of empowerment from the perspective of the student nurse.Using grounded theory methodology, emancipatory and feminist philosophies. Six year Two nursing participants were interviewed and asked to define the term empowerment and give exemplers of moments when they had been empowered in a teaching/learning context. Analysis of data led to the discovery of a theory and development of a theoretical model that described the conditions and consequences that led to empowerment or disempowerment for the student. The theoretical model will be presented and explained, and the conditions that enhanced empowerment will be explored. Recommendations from the research included the need for relevant preparation for students prior to clinical placement, preparation of clinicians through preceptor pregrammes, greater awareness by registered nurses of the communication that is effective in supporting student nurses and support for assisted reflection for students following clinical placements. It was further recommended that the theoretical model be tasted in other contexts |

Abstract |
This paper traces the emergence of categories of nurse over the last hundred years from the time that the Nurses Registration Act became law in 1901. Insights from the work of Michel Foucault are utilised to show how nurses and nursing have been historically shaped and positioned. It is suggested that the recent endorsement by the Nursing Council of New Zealand of the concept and title of 'nurse practitioner' represents an opportunity for nurses to imagine what might be constructed for their roles. |

Abstract |
Post-operative pain is often managed by nurses administering prescribed analgesia four hourly. In contrast to previous studies, the present study is focused on the person experiencing the pain. Five women who were undergoing abdominal hysterectomy agreed to participate in an exploratory study that looked at their pain experience and the coping strategies used |

Abstract |
The author discusses the impact of 'new genetic knowledge' on society and how molecular and clinical genetics are having an increasing influence on routine health care. Increasingly, nurses will be exposed to this new genetic knowledge and challenged to integrate it into their clinical practice in order to ensure that patients and families receive the best health care available. The paper reports the percentage of undergraduate nursing curricula devoted to teaching about genetics and considers how the fundamental principles of molecular genetics and the clinically relevant areas of genetics can be incorporated into pre- or post-registration education. |
