Abstract |
The author reconsiders the meaning of expert, specialist and advanced practice. She proposes that they are distinctive and complementary aspects of every nursing role and suggests a set of attributes for each. Expertise is discussed in terms of the quality of performance, speciality in relation to particularity of performance, and advanced practice with regard to the level of performance. |

Abstract |
This paper continues presentation of the findings of a North Island based research project that explored the impact of clinically focused postgraduate education on advancing nursing practice. Like their international counterparts, increasing numbers of New Zealand nurses are enrolling in advanced practice programmes. Yet, despite international evidence supporting the usefulness of Masters level preparation for advancing clinical practice, questions about the need for such development persist. This paper argues that postgraduate education contributes to the development of courage and that this, in turn, is essential to overcoming the barriers that currently constrain the advancement of nursing practice. |

Abstract |
Investigates nurses' catheter management practices, by means of an audit, as documented in a newly-introduced self-administered indwelling catheter-management checklist incorporating four components of catheter care in a catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) prevention bundle. Identifies these components of the bundle of care as: minimisation of inappropriate catheter use, aseptic insertion of catheters, adherence to catheter maintenance guidelines, and ongoing review and evaluation of catheter necessity. Shows that implementation of care components decreases bacteriuria rates and CAUTI when used together in standardised clinical checklists and performed collectively by nurses. Employs a quantitative research design as part of a mixed-methods study conducted at two surgical wards in a public hospital in Auckland where 50 nurses completed 175 checklists. |

Performs a retrospective descriptive study observing 494 new patients over 6 years. Identifies the percentage of Maori women attending the clinic who were smokers and their likelihood of non-attendance. Emphasises the need for smoke-free education for women that highlights the link between smoking and cervical cancer. |

Abstract |
Reports research that explores the experience of raising a child with severe allergies in NZ and the potential for an anaphylactic reaction. Utilises an auto-ethnographic research approach to provide details of managing the diagnosis and day to day life of a child with severe allergies through narratives written from the perspective of the child's mother who is also a nurse. Undertakes a thematic analysis of the auto-ethnographic narrative, producing four emergent themes: being the mother; being a nurse; who is supporting us?; and desperately seeking knowledge. |
