Reports a five-week study tour of nurse-led child health practices in the US, Scandinavia and the UK to determine what effect such clinics have on child health, and how they differ from NZ practice. Visits nurse clinics in San Francisco, Denver and New York in the US, Copenhagen in Denmark, and Norfolk in England; visits collaborative practices in these locations as well as in London, England and in Stockholm, Sweden. Abstract |
This literature review is an exploration of nurse case management and it will provide the background for the introduction of a nursing case management model in the acute surgical environment at Western Bay Health. Case management is a collaborative process which assesses, plans, implements, co-ordinates, monitors and evaluates options and services to meet an individual's health needs through communication and available resources to promote quality, cost-effective outcomes (Newell, 1996:.3). In undertaking this review it was the author's intention to include the findings as background to a business case seeking the introduction of a surgical nurse case management model within the surgical service. |

This research project studied the ways in which nurses are educationally prepared for, and responded to, ethical problems in practice. The study involved both descriptive and analytical-interpretive methods that provided information and insights on the given aims of the research. The research findings indicated that nurses were educationally ill prepared in the area of nursing ethics. It also maintained that nurses that nurses were quite able to correctly identify ethical issues in their practice, but felt restrained about their freedom to act autonomously in response to these issues |

This report builds upon previous research undertaken in 1992 entitled 'the ethical preparation and practice of nurses: a pilot research project'. The overall aim was to compare new data with the results and tentative conclusions of the earlier research. Following two years of data gathering and analysis and discussions with diverse groups of experienced nurses, the conclusions of the earlier study were re-appraised in light of the contemporary developments in nursing ethics. The main conclusion of the research was that several nurses already possessed an ethic that was appropriate for their practice, but that it was unrecognised by other health professionals |

Abstract |
This thesis presents a study of the every-day moral decision making of experienced nurses. Eight experienced registered nurses participated in the completed research that is based on data gathered through interviews, document audit and literature review. A grounded theory approach was used to analyse the extensive data gathered for the study. This methodology generated a theoretical description involving the antecedents, processes and consequences of nursing moral decision making.Nursing practice has moral content, if not an entirely moral purpose, and moral decision making is the central component of this practice, yet the ethical aspects of nursing practice remain a comparatively recent field of study. It is therefore essential to nurses and their patients that this process is adequately studied and theorised. To date, very few studies have been undertaken in this area in New Zealand. This study aims to at least partially redress this situation by offering insights through conceptualisation and theoretical description of nursing moral decision making.The findings of the study reveal that antecedents such as personal moral development, upbringing and social experiences, contribute to a 'nursing ethic' in the moral decision making of experienced nurses. Furthermore, the study shows that the context and individual and shared perceptions of moral events influence the degree of nursing involvement in ethical situations. Finally, the study maintains that an intrinsic and persistent nursing ethic guides ethical decision making in nursing. This ethic is an undeniable phenomenon of considerable significance to nursing practice and education |

Abstract |
This article examines a growing number of cases in New Zealand in which parents and guardians are required to make life and death ethical decisions on behalf of their seriously ill child. Increasingly, nurses and other practitioners are expected to more closely inform, involve and support the rights of parents or guardians in such situations. Differing moral and ethical values between the medical team and parents or guardians can lead to difficult decision making situations. The article analyses the moral parameters, processes, outcomes and ethical responses that must be considered when life and death ethical decisions involving children are made. It concludes with a recommendation that nurses should be recognised as perhaps the most suitable of all health care personnel when careful mediation is needed to produce an acceptable moral outcome in difficult ethical situations. |

Abstract |
This qualitative thesis uses discourse analysis to examine parental resistance towards medical treatment of critically ill children. It is an investigation of the 'mobile and transitory' discourses at play in instances of resistance between parents, physicians and nurses within health care institutions, and an examination of the consequences of resistance through providing alternative ways of perceiving and therefore understanding these disagreements. The philosophical perspectives, methodology and methods used in this thesis are underpinned by selected ideas taken from the works of Michel Foucault and Pierre Bourdieu and supported by relevant literature in the fields of media, law, children, parenting, caring, serious childhood illness, medicine and nursing. It is argued that from an examination of interview based texts, parental resistance is an omnipresent but transitory occurrence that affects many of the interactions between the parents of seriously ill children and clinical staff. It is maintained that within these interactions, the seeds of this resistance are sown in both critical decision making situations and in everyday occurrences between doctors, nurses and parents within healthcare institutions. Contributing factors to parental resistance include the use of power games by staff, the language of medicine, forms of symbolic violence, the presence or absence of trust between parents and medical staff, the effects of medical habitus, and challenges to the parental role and identity. Overall, it is proposed in this thesis that parents who resist treatment for their seriously ill child are not exceptions to the normative patient-physician relationship. |

This research considers the issues raised by the transfer from New Zealand to India of a degree for registered nurses. In the context of globalisation and the continuing migration of nurses, many countries are actively facilitating the transfer of educational programmes from other countries into their own. This transfer brings with it particular challenges for educators establishing and implementing programmes in a new environment and culture. Based on the experience and reflections of one educator involved in such a transfer, this research considers pedagogical issues such as addressing cultural safety in course content and delivery, expectations of teaching and learning styles, as well as the ethical issues raised by transferring a programme to another country in order to facilitate nurses' migration from it. |
