The two primary objectives that have guided this collation are: to stimulate awareness and discussion of the issues around funding nursing education in New Zealand; and to promote understanding of the complex funding structures currently in place in New Zealand by students, nurses, nurse educators and nurse managers.

  Abstract This article, drawn from a larger study, reports on the factors that have influenced the choice of a group of New Zealand male nurses' clinical career pathways. Using discourse analysis, interview data from 18 participants were analysed and related to existing literature on male nurses. The analysis revealed that the predominance of men in selected areas of nursing can be attributed to multiple factors including: socialisation pressures that are grounded on gender stereotyping, a desire for challenge, homosocial tendencies, and the belief that multiple work experience equips them to be better nurses. The results challenge essentialist readings of masculinity within the context of nursing and identifies challenges for nursing education and the profession to enable men to contribute more widely to nursing.

  Abstract This thesis describes an exploratory study of registered nurses within a local district health board which pursued 'if' and 'how' professional practice frameworks assisted nurses in their individual professional practice. Self assessment and performance appraisal are identified as critical elements of professional development by the Nursing Council of New Zealand, and this became the focus of the author's research. A qualitative descriptive framework was utilised to explore the research question, where experiences of registered nurses employed within inpatient adult medical and surgical settings were collected through questionnaire. Analysis of the data was through general inductive thematic approach. Eight themes arose, of which, two have sub-themes. The first four themes relate to self assessment and performance appraisal and the second four themes relate to professional practice. The findings from the participant's perspective provide an understanding of how participants' utilised self assessment and performance appraisal to inform their professional practice. There are significant implications for professional practice within the findings of this study, which are presented along with recommendations for future practice, and future avenues for research.

It is the complete process of care that focuses on individual patients needs rather than on beds and buildings. There has been a proliferation of research literature since critical care outreach teams were introduced and subsequently required to provide robust evidence in the form of research to prove the effectiveness of their service. The research conducted by nurses has largely focused on phenomenological inquiry and has utilised methodologies such as questionnaires and interviews.

  Abstract Professional development is an ongoing requirement of nurses as a result of the Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act. The Act?s principal purpose is to protect the health and safety of the public by ensuring health practitioners are fit and competent to practise. This survey was designed to explore the avenues nurses have taken, and would prefer to take, for their professional development. The questionnaire was sent to a random sample of the New Zealand Nurses Organisation's registered and enrolled nurse members. Nurses overwhelmingly favoured professional development in the workplace. More than half the respondents reported a conflict with other time commitments, while a number of respondents wrote of their desire for work-life balance. The cost of fees, ability to take time off work, and time and travelling distance were all hurdles to professional development. Nurses cited information technology, conflict resolution, managing challenging behaviour, and dealing with rostered & rotating shifts as aspects of their current work for which their nursing education (pre and post) had not adequately prepared them. Nurses also indicated that their pre-registration education in health systems and political processes was inadequate for their current work. As nurses aged, their interest in professional development increased, though many still preferred workplace options. The authors conclude that, in order for professional development opportunities to be accessible and relevant, resources and time must be made available. This is vital to achieve ongoing education of nurses and improved patient outcomes. Management support, combined with effective assessment of learning needs guiding professional development opportunities, are fundamental to ensuring nurse competence.

  Abstract The author takes a multidisciplinary approach to examine how the location and concept rural is defined and provides a critique of the disparate definitions available. Definitions encompass different disciplines such as sociology and anthropology, and there are national distinctions based on historical factors. The chapter also investigates the way researchers speak about rural people, particularly as the human aspect of health is a primary concern to nursing. The focus is on the socio-cultural, occupational, ecological, and health aspects of rurality. The Rural Framework Wheel is introduced, which is a method to categorise rural contextual definitions. Rurality is presented as a variable and evolving concept that provides particular challenges to nursing practice.

The Framework comprises four systems which describe aspects of rurality; being are socio-cultural, occupational, ecological, and health. These systems each comprise of subsystems, which provide a detailed analysis of the way nursing practice is particular in diverse rural settings. The Framework is presented as a work in progress, and is grounded in international nursing literature. It highlights rural nursing as a unique and challenging field, with the dominant themes of partnership and nursing emerging as underpinning the practice when nurses live and work in small, sometimes isolated communities.

Secondly, it discusses the process and findings of a research project undertaken with the purpose of evaluating a perioperative (theatre and recovery) reskilling programme offered to 42 rural nurses from nine secondary hospitals, conducted over nine months in 2001. The training was given to nurses prior to the introduction of a mobile operating theatre service, and was seen as a key part of the service contract.

  Abstract This chapter describes the development of a nurse-led after-hours telephone triage service in a rural secondary hospital in the Hawke's Bay District Health Board area. This service was a response to the health restructuring in the 1990s, which had led to the shift of secondary services out of the rural areas, and workforce recruitment issues. Secondly, it discusses the process and findings of a research project undertaken to identify and describe telephone callers' reported outcomes after using the service. The study found a high level of satisfaction amongst callers and a high level of compliance to advice.

  Abstract This chapter reviews some effects of the growth of tourism, including adventure tourism and the numbers of tourists over 50, on rural nursing practice. Tourism contributes to socio-cultural change within a community, and health resources that previously met the needs of the local community may not meet the expectations of growing numbers of tourists. The transient visitor includes both the tourist and the seasonal worker, and has become a feature of rural nursing. Major effects on rural nurses include the increased volume of work, the advanced scope of practice required to meet more complex needs of visitors, and challenges to personal and professional safety.
