  Abstract Reports findings from semi-structured interviews with 6 nurses and 7 women patients at a sexual health clinic where the women reported positive experiences of speculum examinations. Combines data with that from interviews with 16 patients and 16 clinicians regarding positive examinations, and analyses data to identify which clinical communication strategies were used, and how the women responded. Highlights the legacy of the Cartwright Report of the Cervical Cancer Inquiry of 1987/88.

Asks women about those approaches used by non-indigenous clinicians, receptionists and service providers that enhanced their experiences of cultural safety during sexual health consultations and gynaecological examinations.

  Abstract Describes the impact on patient waiting times of a nurse-led cough clinic for patients referred to a secondary-care adult respiratory service. Performs an audit of data collected from 75 patients with chronic cough who had been triaged to a nurse-led cough clinic from Aug 2009 to Feb 2011, in which the nurse assessed each patient, undertaking a detailed patient history and clinical examination, and confirming diagnosis/differential diagnoses. Describes patient characteristics, source/reason for referral, and primary diagnosis for cough. Contrasts wait times before and after initiation of the nurse-led clinic.

Interviews 10 MH nurses using a semi-structured format and analyses data using the general inductive approach, resulting in 26 sub-themes organised into three over-arching themes: self management is self-responsibility, self-management is self-awareness, self-management is maintaining safety.
