Abstract: Describes and critically analyses the construction of the nursing identity through curriculum and social relations of power. Conducts a critical analysis using Foucault's power/knowledge problematic to unmask power relations positioning the nurse in the discourses of medicine and gender. Analyses the construction of the nursing identity through curriculum and the social relations of power, using the Foucauldian notion of governmentality.

Abstract: Explores the challenges encountered by nurse educators who seek to assess aspects related to emotional competence in nursing students. This emotional competence includes nurses managing their own emotional life along with the skill to relate effectively to the multiple colleagues and agencies that nurses work alongside. The research was designed to explore the views of nurse educators about the challenges they encounter when seeking to assess a student's development of emotional competence during the three year bachelor of nursing degree. Focus groups were used to obtain from educators evidence of feeling and opinion as to how theory and practice environments influence student nurses' development of emotional competence. The process of thematic analysis was utilised and three key themes arose as areas of importance to the participants. These were personal and social competence collectively comprises emotional competence in nursing; emotional competence is a key component of fitness to practise; and transforming caring into practice. The findings of the study indicate a need for definition of what emotional competence is in nursing. It is argued that educators and practicing nurses, who work alongside students, must uphold the expectation that emotional competence is a requisite ability and should themselves be able to role model emotionally competent communication.

Abstract: The researchers evaluate and compare the organisation of general practice in the UK and New Zealand. A key aim of the Primary Health Care Strategy is a reduction in health inequalities. Locally, some nurse leaders suggest that changing nurse practice employment from general practitioners to Primary Health Organisations will achieve this aim. The authors take lessons from the UK and suggest that nurses organising themselves into peer groups, remuneration of general practices for the attainment of positive patient outcomes, and a statutory duty of clinical governance, all contributed to the development of practice nurses' roles and expansion of numbers of nurse practitioners in general practice. Nurses have become partners with general practitioners in general practice in the UK, which the authors suggest is a much preferable alternative for some than employment by a Primary Health Organisation.

Abstract: This article reports the implementation of a collaborative project undertaken to monitor and improve the effectiveness of the prescribing practicum papers delivered within two Master's degree programmes in advanced nursing practice. The recent introduction of Nurse Practitioner registration in New Zealand has resulted in the development of a number of Master's degree programmes in which students can complete a Nursing Council of New Zealand approved programme for prescribing. For the study, a developmental action research approach was used. Data were collected through interviews with practicum students, their medical supervisors and academic staff. Formative findings were progressively used to refine delivery of the practicum papers and a thematic analysis of summative findings identified areas for further improvement. The findings suggest that the processes being implemented are developing well. The researchers recommend that further education is required to clearly differentiate medical and advanced nursing roles. They recommend that greater attention needs to be paid to the preparation of medical supervisors and, most significantly, revision of funding is required to more equitably support the ongoing development of nurses for advanced practice roles.

Abstract: The author takes a multidisciplinary approach to examine how the location and concept rural is defined and provides a critique of the disparate definitions available. Definitions encompass different disciplines such as sociology and anthropology, and there are national distinctions based on historical factors. The chapter also investigates the way researchers speak about rural people, particularly as the human aspect of health is a primary concern to nursing. The focus is on the socio-cultural, occupational, ecological, and health aspects of rurality. The Rural Framework Wheel is introduced, which is a method to categorise rural contextual definitions. Rurality is presented as a variable and evolving concept that provides particular challenges to nursing practice.

Abstract: The aim of this study was to explore the practice of flexible learning for postgraduate nurses. Flexible learning is a contemporary approach to learning that utilises the benefits of technology. Flexible learning can be understood as a continuum, from fully on-line or web-based courses, to those that are on-campus and supported by technology. Internationally, the rise of flexible learning has been influenced by increased demand for higher education and competition among providers within the context of reduced education funding. The study population, New Zealand postgraduate nurses, are accessing higher education in increasing numbers to advance their practice and to position themselves for new roles and opportunities. These are often experienced nurses yet inexperienced in higher university education, who combine study, work and other commitments. The study employed a qualitative case study design because it enabled multiple perspectives to be gained. Data included documentation, participant observation, survey, students' assessed work and interviews with key stakeholders: student, teacher and the organisation. Thematic analysis was conducted on reviewed documentation, participant observation and interviews. The study identifies the elements that contribute to flexible learning and the interconnectedness between the elements within the dynamic context of a university to illustrate that effective flexible learning can be provided by using a student centred approach to ensure the learning needs of postgraduate nurses are met. The author concludes that flexible learning improved access, choice, and provided an emphasis on the student as central to learning. In response to these findings the weighting of recommendations are toward the organisation as, the author suggests, it is at this level where greater change can be made to improve support for flexible learning provision.

Abstract: Research suggests that the experience of being a preceptor can be rewarding, but there are challenges which may impact on their ability to fulfil the preceptorship role. In an effort to understand the experiences of being a preceptor and the factors that impact on that role, a qualitative descriptive study was undertaken in a small provincial hospital in New Zealand. A purposeful sample of five registered nurse preceptors completed semi-structured audio-taped interviews. Seven common categories were developed from the data – willingness to engage, building a relationship, letting go, support, workload, students in the clinical setting and making judgements. The author notes that this research has highlighted that preceptors need prior notice that they are going to be having student nurses so that they can be better prepared; preceptors and student nurses also need to be rostered together for the whole placement to allow a one-on-one relationship to develop. Preceptors would benefit from having a lighter workload during the first few days of preceptoring as then they can spend more time teaching the student. Schools of nursing and hospitals also need to have an ongoing collaborative relationship in planning and supporting the preceptorship program; this would further support preceptors in their role. The lecturer from the school of nursing needs to be contactable and available to both the preceptor and the student to clarify any misunderstandings and as a resource should any problems arise.

Abstract: This feminist study is an exploration of the subjectivity of women working as nurses within the gynaecological ward. Gynaecology has a long history as a unique area of concern to the health practitioners of any given period. However, the author suggests, recently with the development of modern gynaecology, this specialty has become based on male knowledge and male texts, women either as patients or nurses appear voiceless within this canon. Major tests within nursing mirror a medical construction of gynaecology, with the women involved in the discourse again absent from the literature. To explore the nurses' reality within the gynaecological ward, the author has undertaken a feminist interpretive study. To contribute to this debate the author drew on certain specific notions from feminist and postmodern epistemologies. These notions of the Other, difference, the body and discourse provided a unique way of viewing the practice of the nurses in this gynaecological setting. These epistemological concepts were then interwoven with feminist strategies to undertake the research. Through the process of feminist praxis, which included the author working alongside the nurses and conducting in-depth interviews, three areas of general concern to the nurses emerged. Firstly the relationships, that is their relationships with each other as nurses and with their women patients. Secondly, the difficulties inherent in nurses' practice in this setting due to the nature of the experiences of the women they were nursing. These difficulties arose in relation to two particular situations, nursing women experiencing a mid-trimester termination and nursing women with cancer. Thirdly, the relationship with/in the medical discourse and individual doctors which, according to nurses, had a major impact on their work. This study contributes to nursing knowledge by providing a forum for the voices of women as nurses, who nurse women in the gynaecological ward, to be heard. The author concludes that nursing and feminism have much to offer each other and share an emancipatory goal of positive action to support and assist people in their lives.
