Abstract: A study to determine the content validity of an education instrument to assess the clinical competence of Comprehensive Nursing Students and the reliability of the Nursing Teachers using the evaluation instrument to assess student Nurses performance depicted on videotapes of simulated clinical situations. 24 of the Nursing Teachers in a school of Nursing rated student Nurses clinical performance in simulated videotaped clinical settings. One half of these Teachers assessed the students without a specific evaluation instrument and their assessments were compared with the Teachers using the existing evaluation for assessing Nursing students' clinical competence. The evaluation instrument was judged to be valid in terms of content by the Nursing Teachers taking part in the study. Rated reliability of observer agreement was not demonstrated with 24 Nursing Teachers rating 3 Nursing Students' clinical performance as videotaped in simulated clinical settings. The usefulness of videotapes for determining observer agreement and as a tool for use in staff training workshops, in relation to assessing clinical competence of Nursing Students is established

Abstract: M-Learning compliments and supports E-Learning and incorporates technologies such as the use of mobile phones, PDAs and pod casting. A sub function of M-Learning is M-Support which is the provision of support for the mobile student. This paper describes a pilot project using short message service – mobile technology -to M-support nursing students in primary health care clinical placements. Forty one students took part in a mixed methods study to assess the project against a pre determined set of criteria. The results indicated that students did feel supported by the messages, cost was not prohibitive, flexibility in communication was appreciated, and the acceptance was high.

Abstract: The author presents a review of evidence on the prophylactic use of paracetamol prior to infant and child immunisation. The research was prompted when the Otago District Health Board was planning its Meningococcal B strategy. The evidence suggests that it was appropriate when the whole cell pertussis vaccine was used, but it was not recommended since the introduction of better vaccines such as acellular pertussis with fewer antigens and fewer side effects. Paracetamol may still be given orally to treat pain and fever that occasionally follows vaccination. Paracetamol pharmacology is presented, along with alternatives to paracetamol.

Abstract: This paper explores, through the use of a case study, an evidence-based diagnostic reasoning process utilising the framework followed by Dains, Baumann and Scheibel (1998). This framework, as described by these authors, involves an inductive process of reasoning, which leads to formulation of a hypothesis that is then analysed using an evidence-based approach. From this analysis, a likely diagnosis can be made and appropriate therapeutic intervention initiated. This research demonstrates that although an evidence-based approach is the ideal, sometimes clinical intuition is equally important to the clinical outcome.

Abstract: Discourse about women assuming greater control over their childbirth experience has received much attention in contemporary childbirth and womens' studies publications. Research in the domain of childbirth has shown that a sense of control over one's birth experience is related to childbirth satisfaction. More specifically, studies have used Locus of Control measures and have found a significant relationship exists between expectations for control and choice of birth place. Choice of birth place features in some articles as a factor that determines the degree to which control can be exercised. Home, as a place of birth, is considered a setting in which a woman can have optimum control over her experience. Many women are discouraged from taking up this option, based on fears about safety. Reflection on why women continue to pursue a home birth against the wishes of their care giver rekindled and interest in Locus of Control. This study was undertaken to explore the relationship between urban women's choice of birth place setting and their scores on two different measures of Locus of Control (LOC). The aims of the study were: to test whether LOC scores predict choice of birth place for women who chose hospital, home or a birthing centre as their place of birth; to test which of the two LOC scales (Levenson's generalised measure or Wallston et al's more specific scale) is the most useful in predicting the influence of LOC and choice of birth place and to explore the relationship between choice of birth place LOC, demographic and contextual factors surrounding pregnancy. The method used in the study was a descriptive correlational design. One hundred and ninety four pregnant urban women who accessed a range of maternity care providers in the greater Auckland , Wellington , Christchurch and Dunedin cities responded to a “Birth Choice Survey” between April and June 1996. Tests of significance found significant differences for powerful others and chance Locus of Control among the three groups of women who chose hospital, home or a birthing center as a place of birth. Differences were significant at p = 0.05. No significant differences were ffound in the scores for internal Locus of Control for women in the three groups. Limitations in the sample sixe prevented linear discrimination being successful in predicting the influence and choice of LOC variables and choice of birth place for both scales. A classification tree was employed to identify key variables which might affect choice of birth place and indicated that women who were extremely happy with their birth place choice were more likely to be those who chose home birth. Locus of Control measures are interesting, and if used specifically, may be helpful in relation to understanding a women's choice of birth place. However general assessment of the contextual factors appears just as relevant. Implications of this study are the while women may differ in how they perceive their outcomes are determined, an overwhelming majority of women who participated in this study value their ability to make choices about their birth location. Identifying consumer perceptions about control and the contextual factors that influence women's choice of their birth place has the potential to clarify women's preferences for responsibility in their birth experience. Limitations of the study were addressed and included suggestions to improve response rates and thus generalizability of findings. Implications for further research were also considered

Abstract: This research aims to clarify the knowing and wisdom that inform clinical nurse educators' responses through unpredictable situations. The author referred to philosophical literature on the notions of tacit knowledge, practical wisdom, smooth activity and the Unready-to-Hand experience. She created an explanatory framework and utilised this in a thought experiment by reflecting on personal experiences. To add clarity to these reflections, two layers of interviewing with nurse educators teaching in practice were carried out. The first layer was an interview with eight clinical nurse educators who in their role experienced Unready-to-Hand situations. The second layer consisted of four clinical nurse educators who volunteered to be involved in more in-depth interviews. An interpretive analysis of these clinical nurse educators stories illuminated the “Unready-to Hand as Adventure”, highlighting the uncertainty and energy associated with opening in the adventure, not knowing what will unfold, yet committed to remaining engaged and doing the best they can. Through the process of attuning to difference, accessing and deciphering knowing, nurse educators create meanings of situational complexities. By preserving the ideals of good practice and engaged caring, nurse educators salvage learning by creating opportunities for learning and teaching.

Uses a qualitative approach with data collected through individual semi-structured interviews with preceptors and nurse managers. Due to lack of participation in the quantitative arm a mixed-method study was not completed using an anonymous survey. Undertakes thematic data analysis utilising NVIVO 10 software. Draws four major themes from the qualitative data: (1) Feedback- insight loop, (2) Process clarity, (3) Relationships, commitment & reflective response to participation in the SIP/PIP process, (4) Barriers and enablers to the SIP/PIP process.
