  Abstract Undertakes an evidence-based practice pilot project to examine the effectiveness of simulation-based learning in teaching nursing students to become aware of the role of stress, anxiety and distraction in medication errors. Notes the need to teach nursing students self-awareness of the distractions and stresses within the clinical environment and therefore the need for self-care to avoid medication error.

  Abstract The purpose of this descriptive interpretive study was to explore relationships between student nurses and nurse clinicians. Eleven student nurses at the end of a three year Bachelor of Nursing programme in one institution participated in focus group interviews. Data gathered from the three focus groups were analysed using an inductive approach. Five categories, namely 'being invisible in the relationship', 'not stepping on toes', 'lost opportunities for learning', 'nurturance' and 'reciprocity' emerged from data analysis. These are presented with appropriate quotes to demonstrate the essence of participant experiences. Findings indicated that when students experienced relationships with clinicians as not being positive, this inhibited learning. Conversely, when students saw the clinician as participating actively and positively in the student/clinician relationship then student learning was enhanced. This evidence forms the basis for recommending further complementary research into the clinician's attitudes and perceptions related to their teaching role.

  Abstract Argues that undergraduate nurse education contributes to the problem of too few nurses choosing to work in aged care, by constructing working in aged care as a lower-status or less valuable area of work than other health-care areas. Examines the issue using Foucauldian discourse analysis to explore the dominant discourses being deployed in relation to clinical experience in aged care. Collects data through semi-structured interviews with 10 senior academic staff members from NZ tertiary institutions. Analyses interview data to reveal how a 'nurse education discourse' and a 'work-ready discourse' were shaping perceptions of aged care as a clinical experience in a variety of ways. Suggests that how and why aged care is utilised as a space to learn a range of nursing skills has the unintended effect of devaluing and discouraging employment in aged care settings.

  Abstract Presents the results of a stop-smoking trial using a financial incentive to assist Maori nursing students and a whanau quit-mate to quit smoking. Conducts a marae-based 24-week programme of cessation support with financial incentives in the form of scholarship payments awarded to students incrementally based on proven smoking cessation of both quit mates. Uses focus groups at two points in the programme with students and their quit mates and administers a questionnaire to students at the end of the programme.
