Abstract: In 1973, two trial pre-registration nursing education programmes were piloted in New Zealand polytechnics. These represented an alternative to traditional hospital-sited schools of nursing. The establishment of nursing education in the tertiary sector marked a radical challenge to the cultural heritage of apprenticeship-style nursing training associated with paternal and medically-dominated health institutions. This thesis offers a Foucauldian and feminist poststructuralist analysis of discourses employed by fifteen senior nursing educators in the comprehensive registration programmes between 1973 and 1992. The women employed to teach in the comprehensive programmes faced unique challenges in establishing departments of nursing, in developing curricula that would promote a reorientation of nursing and in supporting candidates to attain their nursing registration. Through semi-structured interviews and discourse analysis methods, a set of unique characteristics shared by this group of early leading comprehensive nursing educators has emerged. The women's narratives were underpinned by discourses that centre around the valuing of education as a vehicle for emancipation and an upholding of a legitimacy of difference in nursing educators' work. The participants upheld the importance of clinical practice skills and drew on their own student nursing experiences as incentives for reforming nursing education. These nursing educators conceptualised an idealised type of graduate, and commonly employed an heroic metaphor to describe their experiences as senior comprehensive educators. Their engagement with such discourses and their shared characteristics demonstrate unique re-constitutions of power, knowledge and relations with their colleagues and clients throughout the education and health care sectors. The author proposes that these traits characterise the women as strategic and astute professionals who successfully negotiated the construction of comprehensive nursing programmes as a legitimate and transformative preparation for nursing registration.

Abstract: In this article, the second of two, the literature is examined to determine the ability of problem-based learning to develop professional nursing practice. Professional practice depends on critical thinking for the development of both rational problem-solving skills and critical reflective thinking. This article proposes that problem-based learning has the potential to develop the critical thinking skills required for problem solving and decision-making. However problem-based learning is less likely to promote the critical reflective thinking without which the transformative practice needed to drive health gains in the 21st century is unlikely to emerge.

Abstract: Describes an innovative solution to designing meaningful learning activities as substitutes for clinical placements in primary health care settings, in which student nurses focus on collaborative learning in a virtual team. Backgrounds their participation in a project focusing on disaster nursing preparedness and management of the sequelae associated with a disaster, particularly the COVID-19 pandemic. Notes how e-learning short courses contributed to student preparation for clinical practice acting as substitutes for clinical experience.

Abstract: The focus of this study is the management of unsafe nursing students within the tertiary education context. The moral dilemmas experienced by nurse educators, specifically linked to the issue of accountability for public safety, are explored. The theoretical framework for the thesis is informed by the two moral voices of justice and care identified by Gilligan and further developed using the work of Hekman and Lyotard. Case study methodology was used and data were collected from three schools of nursing and their respective educational organisations. Interviews were conducted with nurse educators and education administrators who had managed unsafe nursing students. Interviews were also conducted with representatives from the Nursing Council of New Zealand and the New Zealand Nurses Organisation to gain professional perspectives regarding public safety, nurse education and unsafe students. Transcripts were analysed using the strategies of categorical aggregation and direct interpretation. Issues identified in each of the three case studies were examined using philosophical and theoretical analyses. This thesis explores how students come to be identified as unsafe and the challenges this posed within three educational contexts. The justice and care moral voices of nurse educators and administrators and the ways in which these produced different ways of caring are made visible. Different competing and conflicting discourses of nursing and education are revealed, including the discourse of safety – one of the language games of nursing. The way in which participants positioned themselves and positioned others within these discourses are identified. Overall, education administrators considered accountability for public safety to be a specific professional, nursing responsibility and not a concern of education per se. This thesis provides an account of how nurse educators attempted to make the educational world safe for patients, students, and themselves. Participants experienced different tensions and moral dilemmas in the management of unsafe students, depending upon the moral language games they employed and the dominant discourse of the educational organisation. Nurse educators were expected to use the discourses of education to make their case and manage unsafe students. However, the discourses of nursing and education were found to be incommensurable and so the moral dilemmas experienced by nurse educators were detected as differends. This study bears witness to these differends.

Abstract: Literature and discussion on the role of caring theory in nursing has been in evidence for at least the past 30 years. Many nursing theorists have identified caring as the heart of nursing. Nursing is a profession involved and concerned with relationships. These relationships begin in the schools of nursing, and are continued into the clinical practice setting. Curriculum development is focused on ensuring nurses are prepared for the real world of practice. It is the author's belief, that nurses who receive their education in an environment where caring is modelled and evidenced throughout the curriculum, become nurses who continue to practice in a caring way. This dissertation will demonstrate that Swanson's (1991) five caring processes provide a framework to evidence caring practice within a nursing curriculum. The author believes this topic needs to be discussed as schools of nursing continue to review their curricula to prepare nurses for an ever changing and challenging health environment. This dissertation explores the question, 'If caring is at the heart of the profession of nursing, is it also at the heart of nursing education?' The author's objective is to inform the reader, and perhaps encourage educators to be courageous in the demonstration of caring practice, and in the development of caring curricula.

Abstract: This paper continues presentation of the findings of a North Island based research project that explored the impact of clinically focused postgraduate education on advancing nursing practice. Like their international counterparts, increasing numbers of New Zealand nurses are enrolling in advanced practice programmes. Yet, despite international evidence supporting the usefulness of Masters level preparation for advancing clinical practice, questions about the need for such development persist. This paper argues that postgraduate education contributes to the development of courage and that this, in turn, is essential to overcoming the barriers that currently constrain the advancement of nursing practice.

Abstract: Explores what experiences and challenges nursing educators face teaching ethics content and identifies the difficulties encountered in classroom practice. Interviews a self-selecting sample of 7 nursing educators working at a large NZ tertiary institution in the North Island. Outlines the seven dominant themes to emerge from the inductive data analysis process.
